Back in the day when I was a cheap college student with a budget boosted build, I used to mix pump gas with Toluene paint thinner I bought from Sherman Williams by the 5 gal. bucket to make ghetto race gas. You're desired octane rating just depended on the mixture of the 2 + a couple of OZ. of Marvel Mystery oil for lubrication. It was nasty stuff, and I probably will get cancer in the future from breathing it's highly toxic fumes - but it did work as a cheaper race gas alternative when race gas was $12/gal.

Turns out it will eat your fuel lines over time. And with a boosted engine, if you get a tune on ghetto DIY race gas and you mess up the mix in the future in the wrong direction = engine go boom boom. I laugh when I think about some of the crap I used to try. It's best to leave the race gas manufacturing up to the experts.

PS - at the paint thinner store, they always asked lots of questions and wanted to see my ID when I bought Toluene in bulk. I later found out that people use it to make meth - not the car kind of meth - the other kind.
