Default AEM EMS Compatiblility

I'm looking to purchase a used AEM EMS Version 2. The harness plugs look like they are a mix of OBD2a and OBD2b? Do they do this to make it universal?

Part Number: 30-6060 - Series 2 Plug & Play EMS. Manual Trans. ACURA: 1997 CL & 96-99 Integra RS/LS/GS/GS-R/Type-R. HONDA: 96-97 Accord DX/LX/EX, 96-97 Del Sol S/Si/VTEC, 96-98 Civic HX/DX/LX/EX & 96-00 Prelude S/Si/VTEC/Type SH

I'm running a 00 GSR OBD2b Vehicle.

I was also told by the AEM tech support that they make the EMS based on the engines? Could i run a jumper to a car to run any engine with a good tune?

the back of the ecu has the "other plug as well for spare inputs outputs .

but if you get obd2a , and plug in your obd2b harness straight it will not work.

It will work with a jumper harness. I believe only the tach might be an issue, you need to tap another wire ( depends on the conversion harness you get ) .

The pin outs are different for obd2a ( AEM P/N 30-6060 ) and obd2b aem p/n 30-6050

check the manuals below : ( pin out diagram on page 7 / 8 )

Yes you can repin, quite the pain, and chances you will miss something. a step down obd2b to obd2a will make your life much easier.

( i made my own as I was also using a obd2a V1 AEM in a 99 )

hmmm. I just figured since they have a universal plugs obd2a/b it'd be plug in play still. After looking at the spec sheets you showed me really makes me think if i really want to get into this. I guess what obd2a to obd2b jumper would you recommend?

Although they use the same plug header the pinout like stated above is completely different between an OBD2A & B they will not just plug in hence the two different part numbers. There are a number of different jumper harnesses out there.

Avoid the Yonaka one (I believe that's what is pictured) or any of the ones that seem cheap. The cheap ones have crappy soft connector shells that only last a few cycles.

You can get a good quality one from Boomslang, Rywire, etc.

I'm just coming from experience on that. I had tips and and map fluctuations that I traced back to the pins at the ecu connector being loose. Depinned the whole adapter harness and replaced the shells with oe ones scavenged from the junkyard. Problem solved.

I'm sure it has everything to do with number of cycles though. Maybe you installed yours and only unplugged it once or twice after that? My ecu has been out more times than I can count due to me doing some development work with it on the bench.

Could be, I normally dont disconnect my ecu too many times. A few a season, and havent had issues. ( Even thought, right now running a custom one i made from obd2b to obd2a )
