Head bolts are so hard to get loose... but something about using an impact gun seems like a bad idea. Afraid I will snap something off

just use a half of the bar for your jack as a breaker

That is what I currently do... and it sucks

come on dont be a ***** :D, i took off like 1/2 mine the other day .....haha it was a struggle. i was pretty exhausted from just like 5 of them.

HA HA HA...........lol breakerbar, OR use a small hammer and a socket. Put pressure against the bolt and tap frimly a couple of times, until you feel it move. I use this method often on stuborn bolts. Saves knuckles from being busted.

you're supposed to go 1/3 turn at a time...


if you use an impact... i think you'll spin them off... and run the risk of warping the head.... correct me if i'm wrong...

I only use an impact when the motor is cold, and I go in reverse order of proper install. Otherwise those fockers are tough! I've got a drawer of 3/8 14mm sockets that are broken from doing it, but I've never broken a head bolt.

Haha, yeah I broke a 14mm socket just the other day on a head bolt. Cracked it straight down.

Uhhh, are you guys using standard sockets with an impact driver(air gun right?). There are 2 types of impact drivers, the pneumatic type like I suppose you're using and the "manual" type you hit with a hammer. You should be using impact sockets with either one, they're black colored and way stronger. I've never broken a socket before.......The manual type would better for breaking lose those head bolts b/c you can hit the thing as hard as you can and it will only spin the bolt about an 1/8 of a turn

Have to use standard thinwall sockets because impact sockets don't fit into head bolt recess. At least mine don't. That's what craftsman lifetime warantee is for.

Heh, broken 3 Craftsman 14mm sockets, 1 on the head, the other 2 on the rear suspension, 1 of which litterally split into 2 peices, the other 2 sockets just cracked right down the middle.

use a big torque wrench, set it at 5lbs higher than tightening pressure and work slowly, 1/10th of a turn each bolt, 15lbs more if you used threadlock, you run the risk of warpage and bolt strecth if you go crazy with a johnson bar

What are those things torqed to anyways?

I loosened those up on my friends gsr with a 1/2 inch driver and I would literally have to take a 5 minute brake for every two nuts that I loosened.

Pussies Just use a big breaker bar you can buy at Autozone for like 25$... VERY good investment, and if you're steady with it and not jerky, then the bolt come off hella easy...

use a breaker bar with a pipe over it as a handle, much easier on the hands.

I use impact sockets on the impact gun... But I use (and crack) regular sockets with just the breaker bar

Hah, yeah I am super strong. You seen my pic? I look like I am 12 I used a 1/2" breaker bar + jack handle and cracked the freakin 14mm socket

use an impact socket (if ur breaking the regular sockets) or go buy a snap-on... i havent cracked any snap-on sockets from the headstuds yet and iv taken of a lot of heads... and then just use a breaker bar with about 1/3 to 1/2 turn increments (oh... and dont be a bitch about... like some of the pansy asses here! jk)

I've broken them ALL. Strap on, S&K, Mac, Crapsmen, you name it, I've split them (all 14mm's by the way) EXCEPT FOR some small cheap company called Premier. These things I can't find for myself, but my friend who helps me at my shop got them as a gift and he hasn't broken one in 3 years. He said the whole set cost him like 40 bucks or somethin.

jeez wtf are the head studs torqued at?

this is nuts, why do you guys have all these problems with tight 14mm, the only time we cant get a stud off is if the head is warped. - you do use torque wrenches for the head studs right, if you dont your arp's dont do their job right, - torque specs are right on the install instructions.
