Weight Reduction Ideas...
Hey all. I'm looking to turn my car into a track bucket over the next couple years, and was wondering what some of you have done to take some weight out of the car. So far, I have started with the basics... Removed A/C, Cruise, No carpet, no sound deadening, no trunk board.... The car will remain a daily driver for a couple years still, so I would like to try and keep it street legal whatever I do.
I plan on removing the power steering as soon as I can find someone in the area that wants to trade racks...
Any other ideas? The car is a 2000 CivSi.
BTW> posted this up in the road racing, but they sent me over here... they said you would know more
It will be road raced and drag raced... Ideas, Ideas, Ideas.

on my drag car we made a "window frame" out of 1/4 inch tubing and welded little tabs onto it that would hold the frame into the sunroof opening and also had more tabs to hold the lexan onto the window frame, we than had it chromed..turned out pretty nice imo.
-just an idea for you. hth
good luck with your car.
also, you could remove all of the "srs" (airbag b.s) all of the wiring and that "control" unit and such. wouldnt remove too much weight but rid your vehicle of useless wiring
take off front and rear bumpers(metal part behind the bumper cover)

bumper supports are a great idea. For the track I would say. I would keep anything associated(sp?) with bumpers and safety on the car if it is on the street. Just an idea... When you finally take the car off the road, go with a fuel cell... Save your money and buy lots of carbon fiber. Oh yae, go on a diet if you are heavier than 170..hehe, Joke

If your hardcore enough, you can make it weigh NOTHING and still drive it on the street.

Hehe JV, nah, i definately dont drive the car in the winter, and it isnt a daily driver.
And Paul, No, it isnt a crx dash, its a stock civic dash

in terms of easy, and liveable:
in my 2k SI, i pulled out the spare/jack of course, ripped out A/C, cruise went out but thats because of the ctr steering wheel. Window washer fluid (which you could just squirt out the fluid, i removed the whole system.
But heres where the big weight is:
Sunroof: Replace with a C/F piece, and remove the rails and headliner. Switching to a 2dr DX coupe roof is NOT worth it, the welds that put the roof on the car are something you do not want to mess with.
The front, rear(bumper), and (under rear seat) metal supports
The windows have supports but I've never looked into how-to remove them.

If this helps you at all I have a 2000 Si that I have already done all the work you are talking about to. It weighs 1990 lbs with 1/2 tank of gas no driver. For the sunroof I had a paice of lexan cut to fit and tinted. I shaved the lip off the roof around hte sunroof hole and had peice of uniersal glass seal cut to lengtha nd installed the lexan. It looks a little funny because it doesnt sit entirely flush but it works. No passenger seat, no AC,PS,Cruise,Radio, heater or controls, Wipers, (which you may want to keep if its still a street car. No rear speaker deck gutted doors. Next is full lexan and CF parts. Yes its under 2000 pounda nad still has full glass and steel body.

Yes...I need to go on a diet. Thats prob why my car weighs at 2650.

First couple things you can do if you don't wanna start hacking your interior yet is Power to Manual swap. FAL window swap and contact Docotor Cortez on this board. He has a guy Matt that build custom roll cages, and is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G with carbon fiber. He has canards, front lip and the block off plate already and anything else you could ever want. 40lbs gone doing this mod alone.

I don't think that looks amazing but then again I work for a composites company. It only looks decent on one side. Go to my website to see amazing cf. It really helps to have an autoclave. With an autoclave you can make lighter parts than with wet layup in the garage and the finish kicks *** in comparison. Wet layup parts have at least 50% resin content and autoclave/prepreg is around 34%. This means a prepreg autoclave part can be made 16% lighter, not to mention you can use uni-directional cf to design more strength into the part. You can't do that with dry fiber...
