Race Transmissions....

******UPDATED ON PAGE 6******

I know there was a thread about some different transmissions, but can't find it.

After blowing 2 final drives, 2 sets of 4th gears and a set of 3rd gears....its getting old. I have been talking with a couple different people/shops/teams on race transmissions. I am waiting to hear back on some of the fine details, but so far I am contemplating the Libertys gears or the magnus gears.

Links to the sites are here for those that don't know:

http://www.libertysgears.com/frontwheeldrive.htm

http://www.magnusmotorsports.c...a.htm

I am aware these are straight cut gears. This is a street car, tilton cerametallic twin disc, hydro T-O bearing, etc. I drive it to the races, streets, etc. No taking the wife to dinner, movies, etc. But time is killing me and I need a tranny that will handle the abuse with out me having to remove it every other time out. Breaking is not an option so I need something solid.

Not really concerned with the sound of straight cut gears, but only really concerned with the tranny popping into neutral when I let off the gas. I still need to confirm that these do not do that.

The only people I know that run the magnus setup are a few DSM guys and the guys from CFT. They claim to have run the gear setup, with the Phantom grip handcuff with no issues breaking bell housings, gears, etc. 28" slicks, 9k launches, etc....no issues....no bell housing breaking, etc.

I have talked to a few people running the libertys gear set with no issues at all, except breaking the bell housing. Fixes to this have been modify/welding/supporting the stock bell housing and buying the libertys bell housing.

I would like to run the libertys gear sets, but can't seem to find solid info on the requirement of the libertys bell housing. For an addition 2k, I would love to not have to spend it if not needed.

Any insight before this a$$ hurting investment into my money pit would be great. Thanks to those that have already given valuable info...just looking to finalize the purchase.

Thanks, Jason

look into g-forces stuff. we had a bearing made to stop the bell housings from cracking. and there gears hold up just as good as everyone elses. and you will only get a heavy whining noise if you use a straight cut final drive. the gears dont make that much noise with a stock final drive.

Re: Race Transmissions.... (therealpoorboy)

I called G-force b4 and they quoted me about 4k for all there gears , and the bellhousing mod , and I assume that included installing it all also because he said they wanted my old trans and all its stuff and I would get it back and just bolt it in , I would like more info also on this , I have trashed 1 4th gear and a final drive already , but I think I lost my final drive do to my bad install on my diff , I ran the tappered bearing instead of running the closed ball bearings , this time I did it right https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

G-force is pretty good

Got the gears treated....final drive lasted about 2 hours of street tuning around 650whp. Kaboom. This was in a brand new ITR tranny.

There wasn't. Rigid mounts, new shift linkage, everything built to spec, mic'd, inspected, etc. Just lots of trq/power and good traction.

we had a circuit worx 4.7 with a stock b16 gearset/libertysgears handcuff. supposedly stephanie eggum got alot of pass's out of this gearset(it was hers from last season) we have had to replace the main shaft 1once, because all of 1st gear got stripped, a 4th gear, now we just broke it again 2 weeks ago. stripped all of 2nd gear off. i think it would hold up alot better on a car with a smaller tire on it. we put this trans through alot of abuse on 28's. cutting 1.36/7/8 60fts'

i dont think so, this is the 3rd time the SAME exact thing has happened. i have had to be the one to sit by and watch him bust trannies left and right and see and hear the pain https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif

hes done his homework, on everything from cryo-ing to carbon coated items, and now it seems his only choice is to hit the aftermarket world.

its just a PITA to see a great running, good looking fast car, sit in the garage 11.5 out of 12 months due to a tranny issue

I have a heat treat process that has been really working well for me. It helped
Darrell Cox go from 2 pass's on a ring gear to 7 and it's still holding up well. It
also worked on a freinds Honda box, went from 2-3 pass's to at last count over 30.

If you have some spare stock gears around I'd like to see if you can break em
when I get done with them...

I have a few spare trannies....that's not the issue. The issue is the time or lack there of to swap them every time, tow the car home every time, etc.

Re: Race Transmissions.... (Blown90hatcH)

Just blew my 2nd gear in my s2k sunday https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif
Didnt even pull a hard launch or any power shifting, was only sporting 430whp on the pump gas tune when I went, shifted to 2nd and it was like it was in neutral
Now I am going over to a TH350 Tranny (chevy turbo350 3 speed automatic) will be a full manual valve body with 2.52, 1.52, and 1 for the gear ratios

Hope to be up and running in about 3 months again, will also do a bit of rear end mods, my goal is to be the first stock block honda to the 9's so stay tuned https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Will also be redoing the turbo setup with larger T4/T67, 1600cc injectors, big bosch fuel pump the works https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Maybe its the way you guys drive? Tony makes over 700whp, as you can see by his 158mph traps, and we both run OEM off the shelf honda parts. I think we counted 45passes on the same tranny!! We dont treat or polish the gears. Get them from honda and put them in.

But you are also running a carbon clutch, slipper goods and re-adjust / re-shim the clutch every so passes. Also, I want to drive my car on the street quit frequently. I know that competition carbon clutch doesn't liked to be slipped all that much.

Re: Race Transmissions.... (Blown90hatcH)

So i maintain my clutch every 20 or so passes, and most people change their tranny every 5-10 passes. lol

I guess it's the lesser of two evils. You're right though, street driving would wear out the competition clutch we run pretty quick. A tilton 7.25" carbon clutch would do the same as what we run, but not wear nearly as fast. I know it's a big investment, but so is a tranny.

I don't want to have to yank the tranny to adjust the clutch and we have talked about this. For those that have more time, sure...this is probably the better thing to do, but I am looking for tranny feedback so that I don't have to yank the tranny/clutch every 20 or so passes.

Tranny is probably the way to go for me so keep them coming.

How are the Tilton cerametallic twin discs on stock trannies if preloaded on 26's?

tony1 07-19-2006 10:50 AM

Re: Race Transmissions.... (msmotorsports)

The cerametallic disks are a lot more harsh than the carbon disks.
