Default Intercoolers for forward facing setups

I know a lot of you guys do custom end tanks but I'm looking to see what off the shelf units people are using, if there are any good options out there. My turbo is closer to the center than with some of the manifolds such as an afi so I don't have as much room as I wished I did. The intercooler I have right now is about 30" long and could probably be made to work once I get my wide front end but I'm not sure I'll be happy with it. The biggest issue will be the cold side piping. Due to lack of space I had to flip it upside down to get it closer to the turbo, instead of the turbo going straight into the endtank like I'd like. The other reason for doing it that way is the fact that the compressor housing is about an inch and a half further back than the intercooler so I needed room to make that slight transition. Post up what you're using with your forward facing setups. Specs will help. Thanks

What brand of ic is that?

I'd get something shorter and thicker and a garrett core to start and some easy fab work will come out nice and make power with lower Inlet temps.

have an AFI intercooler, but i also have an AFI manigolfd so it fits nicely together.

I know you asked about off the shelft units, but I think that getting a core and having end tanks made up would be a bit easier, and you could be sure that it would fit the way youd like it too.

Do you have any pics of yours? Something backdoor on the passenger side would be perfect. Are you using the 18x12 super street intercooler?

It is an 18''x12'' core, but it has different endtanks then the ones that are shown on AFI's website.

Here is a front view of it. Im not sure if I have a picture with the bumper off or not. Ill have to look around a bit more for that one.

Yeah I happened to find a pic of yours with the bumper off. Is this something they made for you or do they sell one like that? If the length is short enough I could live without a backdoor on the passenger side. My turbo is definitely closer to the center than yours though as you can see here.

I called them up and told them to send me an intercooler that would work with the manifold I ordered the week before. LOL. So im sure they could get something fabbed up for you.

It would appear that a backdoor would work better for you since like you said, youres looks like it sits at least and 1'' or 2'' to the center than mine.

Yeah, custom is always an option I was just trying to avoid it. I've been waiting on my front end for over 6 months now and if I had it, I could better determine what will and what wont work.

I almost feel like you should flip your intercooler so the inlet is on the bottom and clock your turbo. . . having a crazy bend like that is not needed.

you will notice huge gains by using a better intercooler core than what looks to be a shelf xs power / ebay intercooler (not knocking on your set-up) we found using a precission core our IAT's dropped 20 degrees over the junko intercooler we had on our car

Thanks for the input but as I've already stated, the compressor housing is about an inch and a half farther back than I can get the intercooler inlet. Flipping it over and clocking the turbo to feed directly into it isn't an option without building something with custom endtanks. I would have for sure flipped it over if that were doable. I have hardly no money in this intercooler and am definitely not against going with something else. The issue is size. So far every off the shelf intercooler I've found that is rated to support around 1000hp is as long as the one I have.

Oh yeah I know that. I have a coupler on it now just to keep trash out but the car will have no couplers/clamps. Everything will be vanjen clamped. It's obvious ya'll can't see what I can see. Maybe this will help.

If I could push the intercooler farther towards the passenger side then doing it this way could work but as you can see I already have enough issue with space as is. Flipping the ic and clocking the turbo puts more distance between the ic inlet and compressor outlet while allowing the ic to still be close to the turbo. That distance is going to be needed in order to fit a vanjen clamp and make that small bend outward to make the two pieces line up.

I'd love to do it the other way, and I will if I can find a short enough intercooler that will support the power. That's the whole point of this thread.

Strada. I have a da. It's not something that can just be pulled off the shelf like the other chassis's. I'm not saying it should take that long, but I expected it to take longer than he said it would. I don't care what anyone says though, it's happening with all companies these days.

I was wondering what ic you were using. I like the look of that end tank. What are the dimensions of your core?

The core is 24x12x3. If i did it again, I would get a core that wasnt so long, and a little more thick. I dont like how short i had to make the end tank on the turbo side.

Yeah if I'm going to build one I'd be interested in a core that's 5-6" thick. I'll have plenty of depth to work with in the bumper. I like your design though. I'll definitely want to do a rounded end tank like that.

Not trying to be an a$$hole but you pretty much have you're answer right there. I go through the same thing getting stuff for my EF as there are not many "off the shelf" parts that work on our cars. You're car looks pretty bad *** to just have a intercooler set up that was made to work. Make some custom end tanks for it and call it a day. Like stated before, might wanna look into getting a more efficient core also.

that over head view does make it look a little more difficult.

But a good fab guy can make thatwork no problem what so ever. Id like to see what you come up with as a solution.

Car looks badass BTW

Thanks. I'll probably end up doing that. I'm getting anxious to get it complete the closer it gets but I need to stay focused and not cut corners. I've did good so far.

Apparently I have the only forward facing manifold that places the turbo closer to the center lol. Which with this chassis I had to cut enough to make the s400 fit as is. The placement on all the other manifolds I see would have probably put the turbo right on the frame rail. That's what I get for picking an odd chassis.

yep i bet if slap that manifold and turbo on a eg it fit perfect..you knew the job was going to be tough when you took it..lol..i see your going to have to move the radiator to have a straight shot to what ever intercooler you get or just have the intercooler inlet offset toward the turbo..definantly going to take alot of mock up,to get it right.!!gl. bro!
