Default DAMPNER WOES!!!!!!!!

I have an ati race dampner and i having issuse with the crank bolt backing out on me and the crank walking off the shout. I installed the hub with the moroso tool and then torqued the crank bolt to 200 ftlbs and with red lock tight but it still loosen up. It damaged the hub and crank shout. Here are some pics and any suggestions or has this happened to someone else.

I had the crank and everything balanced before i put it together for fall nationals. I have to take the tranny off and check that also. If it is loose, what do you think it is?

what kind of motor is that? cuz i have never seen a gear look like that from factory, usually its just a belt locator washer. that end piece on the gear looks to be taking up too much of the snout on that crank maybe why its coming off.

by the way it looks guessing a single cam 96+ those ati are used with a earlier model crank gear i believe.

What clutch/flywheel combo are you using?

i know of 2 other cars that had that exact problem.

1 customer had a damper bolt back out & wipe out the crank!
then had a new shortblock built with a brand new damper & w/arp crank bolt & 1/2 down the track had to shut it down due to the new engine/crank/damper & bolt to have it happen all over again!

im interested in hearing how often this happends

the 2nd car has a nice stock crank, 600hp h22a w/ stock crank pulley & bam bolt backed out of that one.........

its frustrating... i believe it could be in the balancing of the flywheel or the flywheel backing off the crank & knocking the thrust out of the crank & causing the bolt to vibrate loose.

It is a h22 motor and that spacer is the balanced shaft gear. I am running a spec twin disc set-up. Everything was balanced by the machine shop.

The trust washer where fine. I was thinking after this happened, to take out the balances shaft spacers and put the belt guide on the other side and press the hub all the way to the gear. If I have to cut the snout of the crank I will do that.

The h has the balance shaft gear. Thinking to remove that and put a belt guide washer on the otherside like a b motor. Then press the hub into the timing belt gear. That is what I ment.

ok use the obd1 H crank gear then the H balancer belt gear then add the crank pulley.

but even though it doesnt look like you have no room left on the crank for the balancer,

I use the timing belt gear, balance shaft gear, and the dampner but the hub has some space before it is even with the outside of the hub. I was thinking to get rid of the balance shaft gear and put the dampner all the way in. That couldn't hurt if it works.

usually when ***** starts "breaking" or "coming loose" like this, its caused by some serious harmonics.

Harmonics of an inline motor are the worst. There is a sweet spot that rattles **** off. If you put it together with the same type of parts it will prolly happen again. You need to change something. I've destroyed the same parts mutiple times. I would loosen my ati hub and tilton flywheel. The would loosen and shake till they cold welded together. So i double keyed the crank for the hub and press fit dowled the flywheel to the crank and it still happened.. Then swithed from a 10lb flywheel to A 6LB and it went away. The weight difference off set the horrific shake that all inline motors produce and there hasn't been an issue since. Thats my take on it.

Yeah the parts are cold welding themselves together. The h flywheel is pinned in one spot. I should try to cut out some weight off the flywheel then.

to add to this he also has solid mounts and a mid plate, this happened before and the dampener sheared the end of the crank off at the oil pump, he also lost 2 stock oil pumps at the track(one lasted for a burnout thats it) before going with the moroso oil pump.

Also the suspension has had some issues, maybe tire shake?? not sure

here is a vid of it launching notice the tires

I think the oil pumps went because i didn't have a clutch pedal stop and was pushing on the pressure plate to hard and destored a thrust washer. i think it was pushing to hard on the oil pump gear causing them to break.

I friend of mine just mentioned maybe when they balanced it, they didn't balanced it at a high enough rpm. Is that possible or heard of?
