Buy a 5 pin relay
Hook pin 30 to a constant power +
Hook pin 85 th an earth -
Hook pin 86 to a 12 volt power supply that is on when you have the ignition on.
Hook pin 87A to your led

This is presuming you led can take 12 volts, it may be something like 5V in which case 12V would blow it

If i can remember correctly, i believe all the led scanners have built in resistors... so the 12v's is fine

Now that you mention it I've heard some of them some with a relay built in so you would only need to hook up three wires, check the instructions.

what resistors would be needed to ensure that a 5v led will not blow from a 12v source?

there should be three wires, red, blk, and another color (don't remember the color) and I believe you just hook up the last wire to the ignition wire
