headunit: plays cds and radio, but don't listen to radio because the sound quality sucks. Good brands are Eclipse, Alpine, Pioneer
amp: increases the power output to the speakers for cleaner sound at all volume levels. with amps, you get what you pay for.
amps come in different layouts ie # of channels. 4 channel amp is used to amp your 4 speakers. 2 channel amp can be used to amp either your front or your back speakers, but most commonly it's used to power two subs. A mono amp is used to power a sub and sometimes 2 subs.
sub: Requires an amp, power kit, rcas, speaker wire, and a box. only plays the lowest notes giving you some real bass and allows you to relieve your other speakers from trying to play bass so that they can sound better just playing mid and high range
speakers: In most cases you should give priority to replacing the speakers first as they will make the most dramatic improvement in sound quality.
ohms is a measurement of the resistance of your subs. Lower means more power, but you have to have an amp and subs that can handle it. It also depends on how the subs are wired, and how many voice coils they have. It's best to leave this up to a professional. In fact, unless you've been trained specifically for mobile electronics, leave ALL of the installation to a professional. Don't get your friend who's a mechanic or who sets up home stereos to do it for you.
IMO, all cars need a decent stereo with a non fader output, front speakers, and a sub.
