Sony Mobile ES CDX-C90
This deck is the **** for the audiophiles. It has awesome clearity, ease of use. The rotary commander is good, but easy to break and expensive as hell to fix. The display sucks *** in daylight if it isn't angled properly. At night I really like it. I've had the deck for over 2 years and I wouldn't sell it for any amount. Sure the display sucks, but I don't look at the display all that often. I'm in it for the music.
okay....is it an mp3 deck?? and i heard it donesn't have a built in amp....so that means if i install it i wont hear any sound? I also heard taht it will only work wit teh sony explode amp
the older sony es's is Gold compared to the newer xplode stuff by sony.
that c90 and cdx-910 are both like 900-1000 dollar units
.... copper chassis, burr brown converters and mad signal to noise ratio. just top of the line stuff. I'm not sure if it plays mp3's but changing them to wma's should do the trick(just because it is an older deck). it is still considered one of the best decks ever by true audiophiles. yeah it has no output power but if your hooking up a system about true clarity, you'll use amps ..not the power from the deck.

20 bit Burr/ Brown D/A converter. ohh so creamy.
I don't think it plays MP3s...... ( remember it's an audiophile piece) haha. no, i think they were a bit too old for the mp3 deal.

no offense, but if you are asking these kinds of questions - this headunit is not for you....

maybe the newer sony stuff suits your needs better.
i dont see what the big deal is with Mp3 decks anyways. yeah its kinda cool to have 150+ songs on a cd and they show the name and everything but the quality suffers a lot.

You should probably sell it, chances are you can get a bood bit of money for it from someone looking for one, Those things are gold to us audiophiles..lol
And with the money you get for it, you will be able to buy a unit that does play MP3's (yours does not). And get one that you will probly enjoy much more.

yup, it is a true audiophiles unit. i have one too, and it is one of my favorites of all time. ( and i have many top of the line decks ) i even like it better than my Alpine CDA 7990 F1 Status. currently, the C90 is second only to my McIntosh MX5000.
if it's in good shape, i'll give you $300 for it, but to be perfectly honest, thats ripping you off... or, i'll trade you for an MP3 deck of your choice under $500 MSRP... but thats still ripping you off. you are going to be downgrading if you do this. eBay market value for a used C90 ranges from $400 to $600, and my last two sold for a little over $700. ( the C90 in that eBay link above sold low, probably because they had a reserve... reserve auctions seem to always sell low )
if you want to play MP3's, there is a Bus Audio In RCA set on the back. i've even seen people run two head units, the C90, and some MP3 player. most end up not using the MP3 player because of the degraded sound quality. however, most use an Ipod or something like that if they want MP3.
you do not have to use Sony amps... im using McIntosh amps. that Xplod Mobile ES amp that you have has much to be desired... but you can use any amp you want.
if you can afford it, get an XDP 4000 processer, or a XDP 210EQ. everything is controlled from the head unit, and 99% the functions of the head unit can be controlled from the remotes.
my recommendations is for you to keep the unit. like i said before, just about anything else is going to be a downgrade.

I think the only negative thign I've ever heard about the C90 +4000x are two or three fold
1. the display is aweful
2. the crossover points are limiting
3. you don'g et the same SQ output from the 4000x as you do from the C90 because of the quality of parts used in the 4000x - perhaps dave can substantiate that claim....

I have the CDX-910 and MDX-400
The CDX-C90 is similiar to the 910.
Display sucks!!! in both the 90 and 910
910 had issues with the output blowing all the time. I would imagine they have fixed it since. Actually thinking of selling my 910
Niether play MP3's
Hook it up to a 210eq with a fiber all the way to the trunk and it kicks a$$.

ye man...i hate the display...its sooo bad...i can't see nething
also i hate teh fact that i can only use the remote to access teh menu, which is sooo gay, wat if i lose the remote!?!?
and i printed out the manual...and it dont even telll u half teh stuff....even simple stuff like settin radio stations!!
i thought the built in memory stick meant that it would save my tracks so i could play them without teh cd...but all it does is memorize the order u want ur tracks played in when u put in the cd ( i could just make my cd with the tracks in teh order that i want them)

Yes, it's true - you can't access all of the features with out the remote. If you want to set the station memory, press and hold the button until it beeps or flashes...should take just a second. It's just like most any other headunit out there.
if you want to see a pic, either go to the JL site and look for their project GTI, or search Ebay...there's always a few on there

ok,
sorry for the bad pic. it was dark.
yes, it is better than your Alpine. this is an audiophile grade unit... i like it better than my $3000 Alpine CDA 7990 F1 Status, which is Alpines best unit ever. this is before the Xplod stuff.
you are either new to high end car audio, or very recent. these are very sought after by the high end people, and have been for years.
yes, audiophile units are not flashy. do a search on McIntosh MX5000... some would think it's downright ugly, but for SQ, it's my favorite unit i own, and i have had every head unit known to man pass through my shop. My Denon DCT-1 is ugly too... so what... go buy a flashy cheap Alpine if you want bling.
the C-90 was my cheapest unit that i own. MSRP is $1299, but can be found for less. however, like i mentioned before, i like it better than my 7990, or even my Denon.
for those of you that are upset that some of the controls have to be accessed with the remote... ummm... all of my units above are like that. welcome to the world of high end.
rcurley55, 1. yes, the display is useless in direct sunlight. but then again, like any competition unit, it spends 99.9 % of the time with the display off anyway.
2. never had a problem with the crossover points with the equipment im using. i have total control.
3. from an engineers standpoint, i dont see any low quality components in the 4000. however, i have all kinds of processers, and have used them all. some are good, some are not. the 4000 is good, but not the best. but the ease of compatability with the C90 is good... besides, most people here would never notice the SQ degrade, it is so small. they would notice an improvment in SQ with the C90 anyway, regardless of the small loss from the 4000.
nsxxtreme, the C910 is quite a different unit. it's a complete different preout section. yes, i've had to repair the preouts on a few 910's. never had to on a C90. the 910 was from before the C90. the C910 insides look more to me like the C880, than it does to the C90.
devilpuppy, trial users cannot use instant messages, and i cant remember my old screen name. but it's a deal. just e mail me.
