Check grounds, battery terminals. I have seen this happen when the output from the alternator is low. As in, VERY low. Check the voltage across the terminals, with headlights on and off. You see: braking turns on the brake light which, if you alternator is WEAK, will sap power away from the headunit. Same with headlights, obviously. Did you have similar problems with other headunits? Does it cut out when using other power functions (if you have them.)?

If it WERE an alternator issue, my bet is that the radio would not cut out if you hit the brakes while keeping the engine revving high. Same with the lights (I bet the radio starting working again as soon as you began driving.)

Also: check the radio fuse. Sometimes corrosion on fuse blades can cause voltage drop. Check your ground wire. How did you wire the radio in? If you used wire nuts or electrical tape, try re-doing it using crimp on barrell (butt) connectors.

Did you test voltage across terminals? I would do that before pulling the alt.

Am I right about it not cutting out at higher RPM?

And check the radio fuse for corrosion. You never know.

Fuse is fine first thing I checked

Yeah it only happens at low rpms

I don't have a multimeter so I can't test it :/

Alternator is only a year old :/

Unfortunately, the alt being only a year old works against you. I find alot of the time remanufactured (or aftermarket) alternators fail rather quickly. I personally would rather find a working one in a junkyard if that is an option. Also- check harborfreight for a multimeter. I got one there for ~3$ about 3 years ago and it still works great! I can't even tell you how many times it has saved my ***.

If you are not having problems starting the car, it is unlikely you are having problems with the alt., because problem started with HU losing power and "resetting" check the HUs 12V constant power fuse, almost always in engine bay fuse box and almost always a 7.5A marked "back up".94
