Default Is something wrong with my radar detector?

I just bought a new Escort 8500 X50 radar detector and installed it as soon as I got it. After driving around for the day, im wondering why it hadnt beeped when I saw a cop-car on the side of the road(speedtrap), cop passing me in the opposite direction, and a group of cops with their lights blaring after having pulled some1 over?? The manual says that if the detector doesnt beep, then the police doesnt have his radar on, well I thought that was true until I passed about 5 more cops and the thing still didnt go off.

Is this normal or wtf? Has any1 else had this problem?

I've had problems with every detector i own...Works great in my nissan, but as soon as i put it in the itr, it falses like crazy, then reads, "service required" or "antenna maintenence." So, i really don't use radar detectors any more, simply because they give you a false sense of security. You think you can speed whenever you want and not get a ticket, but then you get on and you're screwed. So, screw detectors, imma just go with the flow of traffic.

It depends on where you live. I know cops in the states that I travel in now almost never have radar or use it. When I go to NY to visit family and friends, almost every po-po is running Ka with instant on.

A way to check if it's working is to drive by some grocery stores or places with automatic doors to see if you get any X or K band signals. Do you ahve any tint, or anti-glare coatings in the car? That can effect performance as well. I'm running the same detector, and it's spot on every time. Never had a problem with Escort products.

Then it's working, and your police are probably not using radar. I've always said that your eyes and common sense are the best 'cop' detectors. The radar detector just helps when they're hiding and being sneaky.

Some municipalities stiill use timers for speed traps. They have lines on the road, and they hit a timer button when you pass them, the computer does a quick calc based upon the distance and outputs a speed.

But like I said, I can go months without getting a reading where I live now (and my office is next to a state police, and city police barracks), but as soon as I cross into NY, the thing lights up like a christmas tree.
