Default Sealed or ported?

What have you guys had better success with, sealed or ported box. I have a small sealed box right now but would like some low GHETTO bass, also more SPL. So I'm thinking of going with a ported box.

Sealed = Tight, Clean Bass
Ported = SPL, and Low Bass

I think you know what to do now

i think jlaudio.com has a tutorial section that explains each type of box, how they work, pros and cons, and even how to build them (i think)

PORT THE IDQ's!!!!!!!!!

I don't understand why people don't port these woofers, not only do they go LOW, but they get pretty loud too.

Image Dynamics 12" IDQ's, PPI amp, I can either do 600w x1 @4ohms or 300wx2 @2ohms.
I have them wired mono right now in a sealed box. They sound nice and tight but I have to turn the gain on my amp kind of high to get the "boom" I want. That causes my amp to warm up more than I would like it to. What do you guys think about those rear sealed band pass boxes.

Check out my post above...trust me, I've had those woofers in both boxes, and the ported is the way to go!

I personally avoid bandpass like the plague. Maybe one day I will hear one that I like.

Ports are your friend.

ported boxes
sealed enclosures
check the specs on those woofers.. they should have dimensions for both ported and sealed enclosures..
or be like me an go with a fiberglass floor box

If you want to try both, and the woofer can go 2 cubes ported, or sealed. You can build the box, port it. And listen to it ported, and with the port closed(sealed) to determine which you prefer.

Well I think I'm going to port them but I read on the web site to give each woofer 2.0 cubic feet w/ a 4"x14" port. However I called Image Dynamics and spoke with their tech support and he said to give them 1.25 to 1.5 each with 3"x14" port. Which should I build?

If spoke with the guys at ID, listen to them. I dont' know where you got 2 cubes from their web site...maybe you were looking at old data from the original V1's?

I'd suggest a box that is 1.5 cubes gross, tuned to around 30Hz. I used 10 square inches of slot port on my box. I took my design from thier tech sheet:

http://www.imagedynamicsusa.co....html

But converted the round port to a slot port. You will find it terribly difficult to squeeze a port of that size into a box that small without getting the port tube too close to the walls of the enclosure. You will probably have to put a bend in the port or slot port it.

If you build this box right, you will love it....let me know if you would like me to check out your box design.

Two things:

1. are those your inside or outside dimensions - assuming that you are making a square box?

2. you need two ports...not one

Those are the out side demensions, and I meant two ports.

That will get you 2.9 cubes, which is the larger enclosure...make sure you brace that enclosure well.

How would I brace the box?

What kind of bass should I expect from this size box?

REad this:
http://www.jlaudio.com/tutoria....html

You will get a strong low end, and really accurate bass. I have no clue what "ghetto" bass means....

Just make sure that if you go to a ported design, you don't go blaring a bunch of really low frequency stuff through it without a subsonic filter. Below the tuning frequency (you will be in the 28-30Hz range) the box is no longer able to help control the movement of the cone.....this can lead to lots of damage, so just be careful. You will have no problems with regular music, but a bass CD may creep up on you.

Thanks for the link. What about the ports, do they need to be facing the same direction as the woofers?

Well I just finished the box, threw it in and turned on my stereo.... but I heard no bass. Just as I started to freak out I remembered that I had turned the gain all the way down, at this point I had the volume pretty high, so when I turned it up DAAAAMN! I could believe how loud and deep they were playing. I doubt I will ever do a sealed box again, unless I have a huge class D amp. I just want to thank you guys for your help it was greatly appreciated. The only problem now is fighting the urge to play a bass CD

My new sub is my first ported sub in a car.

I have had it running off 2 channels from my 300/4 for three weeks. I purchased a 1500dr yesterday. OMG. I think the hatch is going to jump off the car. My friend wanted to hear it when we were leaving an underground garage last night. A quick note set off half a dozen alarms

Now I have to tackle electrical problems. My lights will dim on the freeway , if I turn it up. Well all lights besides the HID's.
