relay question - current keeping relay on?
Hello-
I have a SPDT relay controlling my HIDs. I have the OEM headlight wire going to pin 85 and 86 is grounded. I have 12v coming to pin 30 through a 20A fuse and heading to the leads for the HID ballasts.
I noticed the HIDs have no dependance on the headlight switch.. they are always on. This was not the case before; I Was able to sucessfully use my OEM switch to control the HIDs.
Any idea why this is happening?
Thanks!!!!
Seb

any idea what the short would be between? Ill rip into it today and see if the relay is bad
The relay clicks on and off with the OEM headlight function
The relay clicks on and off with the OEM headlight function
What pin on the relay are the HID ballasts connected to?
Should be #87. if it is, replace the relay it is shorted out.
By your description " I have 12v coming to pin 30 through a 20A fuse and heading to the leads for the HID ballasts." it sounds like your not running the power through the relay but just paralleling power to the ballasts and relay.

Thanks for the reply fcm
Yeh it was late at night and I may not have conveyed my situation clearly. I didn't bypass the relay
there is 12v on pin 30 and the ballasts are on 87

Unplug the ballast power leads from #87, do the lights stay on or go out?
If they go out the short is in the relay, replace it.

I didn't get a chance to check it last night, so I will tonight.
Also - (I think I know the answer to this) but should i use a diode between any of the poles on the relay? If so which ones and what diode?
Thanks!

A diode can be installed across #85 and #86 cathode, [white band on 12V+ side], this will prevent arcing of the contacts and add life to the relay, and could prevent relay from "freezing up", [very rare] arcing contacts normally will result in no contact instead of constant contact, however you say you can hear/feel relay "click" so it is working, [not frozen].
