Just Above Stock
So peep this...
I got a 1996 Honda Civic DX Hatchback that I plan on putting a new system in. By a new system, I don't mean that I'm gonna go all out and purchase amps, sub-box and woofers, none of that. I'm getting tired of the cheap, crackling sound of the stock ones. I just want something that's above stock and is a direct fit. I was looking at some Alpine speakers at Best Buy and they didn't seem too bad since they had good reviews.
Since I'm putting in a system that will probably demand more amps, I'm probably gonna need to put in like a higher-rated fuse. I'm not too audio-tech-saavy, but I'm always willing to learn new things.
Any suggestions is appreciated!

If you plan on only doing a new head unit and speakers, the factory wiring is fine. Some like to run a larger gauge fused constant (12v +) to the battery, not a bad idea but not required IMO. Efficiency is the key when going with amplified deck power and aftermarket speakers, stay away from separates (woofer/tweeter) with separate x-over components, they generally demand more power and require a separate amplifier for best performance. A good coaxial speaker is fine for what your looking for.
BTW, don't believe the output claims of aftermarket head units, most that claim they are 40 watts X4 or 50X4 are not accurate, most "high power" head units are 10-15 watts per channel on a good day with all the stars in perfect alignment.

As mentioned, you can use the stock wiring but you should run the HUs constant power lead directly to the batt., run a fused 12ga power lead from the batt. to behind the HU and connect the HUs 12V+ constant (yellow) to it, you should also add a 12ga ground lead from the chassis of the HU to the cars chassis.
The above is a must, if you want the best possible performance from the HU.
The stock 12V+ constant power lead can not deliver the current needed by "high power" aftermarket HUs, in most Honda/Acura the lead has a 7.5A fuse and the circuit is also "memory" or "back-up power" for the ECU/ECM.
If the new HU is grounded to the chassis by the use of a metal back support, [as it should be] you will not need the 12ga ground lead.
As for "and is a direct fit. there is nothing but stock equipment that is a direct fit.
For your car you will need this kit... http://documents.victorytechno...4.pdf you will only use the trim piece, it will cover the two holes in the little pocket to the right of the HU and you will replace the plastic back support with a metal "L" bracket for better support and grounding.
You will also need a harness adapter, check at best buy for a "direct connect" harness, it will have the proper plug for whatever HU you get at one end and the Honda plug at the other end, [plug and play]
For speakers to be "direct fit" you will need to find a standard 6.5" speaker with a mounting depth of 2" or less, do not confuse a standard 6.5" speaker with an over-sized 6.5" speaker, the two things to remember are you need a speaker with a 5" mounting diameter and 2" mounting depth.

BTW, what is the model number of the Alpine speakers you are looking at?
