how many watts of a amp to use on a 1200 watt subwoofer??

Well im guessing that the sub is 600 Watt RMS so an amp that has at least 600 watts or RMS. I would go with something a little bit more powerful amp wise cause its better to over power than it is to under power. BTW what type of sub is it?
