my original factory 97 ex radio had a 5 disc changer hooked up to it. at first all my speakers worked, then at times my left ones would cut out and not work. I asked a audio installer and he said that it was the headunit. So then i swapped in my 95 civic radio, this worked, and all the speakers worked until recently. When i used my ipod in the tape deck all speakers would work, if i used the radio all would work. but if i used a cd, the front left would not work.
so naturally i decided to upgrade to a pioneer headunit. I just installed it, i have power to ever speaker, 5.8v or somethin, but for some reason my front left speakers are not working. everything else works perfectly, but it sounds like i am deaf on the left side. I tried to fade it to the left and when i go fully to the left side, nothing comes out.
WTF do i do!

check to make sure that one of the terminals is not being grounded to your chasis through the door or any other way, sounds like you have a short that is unidentified somewhere. Where did you reference your ground to when you measured the 5.8V going to each speaker? I once had a problem where water was getting into my crossover mounted in the door on my right side, and it would sometimes cause my entire right side (front and back speakers) to not work. I suggest ripping out your speakers and double checking connections and go from there
You don't test for DC voltage. You could test for AC voltage if you have a good multimeter that can read very low amounts of AC. But the preferred way is to first check the ohms between the two wires from behind the deck, should be close to 4. If that fails you can check each wire for continuity to ground. Any continuity is bad.
If it's an intermittent problem, you can turn the radio on and then shake the door or wiggle the harness and see if you can make it cut out. Also check whether the speaker terminals might be contacting the sheet metal.
