I'm in the process of designing a center console for my 99 CRV. I have a 8" sub in the back that's taking up room, so I figured I'd make me a custom center console to house the sub. It'll give me a little extra storage and also an armrest. The sub is in the back on the armrest area, there is a little cubby by the e-brake for storage, and it's got an extra cup holder
Drew the plans in Sketchup:
Then I made a mock up using poster board to test fit:
Wasn't all that concerned about making it perfect, just wanted to get the overall size for test fit.
I'll probably drive around like this for a bit to see if I should tweak some of the dimensions.
I'm thinking about spraying everything except the two top pieces with rattle can truck bed liner. The the top cup holder and arm rest area I was thinking about putting some padding down and wrapping it with vinyl. I would do the whole thing in carpet, but damn, that looks like a nightmare to wrap nicely.
Looks great! Vinyl is challenging to work with if you don't get the right type. A lot only stretch one direction at a time, you definitely would want something that can stretch in two directions at once. When I do consoles I usually do most/all of it in carpet, suede, or some other similar fabric. If there's an opening arm rest, I will usually only finish that part in vinyl.
