Default Best Sub for small box

Looking for recommendations for a 10" (or really good 8") sub for a relatively small footwell custom sub box.
(NSX - no interior space, trunk not an option - engine in between!)
Amp is 300W @ 4ohms from Hifonics Zeus ZX8000
Suggestions?
Anyone know anything about the new Infinity variable Q Perfect VQ10?
I've heard Nakamichi is very strong
Any other suggestions on best application for a smaller box?

I think you would be better off with an 8. I have an Illusion Audio 10" in mine. I built a custom fiberglass enclosure for it, using the factory box as a mold. Still doesn't sound that great. I am going to try to make it a little bigger and port it. I still think you would be better of with a good 8. A ten is a very tight fit.

I just finished an all glass box for 2 ID8v3's in the trunk of a civic. It fits between the spare tire and the bumper and is 0.7 cubes - I'm IMPRESSED with how it sounds for just a little pair of 8"s.

It would be worth looking into IMO. The problem wiht them is that they are pretty deep drivers, but they have around 15mm of Xmax.

Unfortunately, 300W is way too much for that woofer, but you could get a D4 and let it rip at 8 ohms.

Maybe a JLW6 8 will work in there....if you want a small box 10, I'd stick with an IDQv2....you can get it to take 300W without a problem and it will be happy in 0.5 cubes, but the bigger the better for SQ...it depends on what you want. The basket is fairly small on them, so that's a good thing.

What's needed on the NSX is small mounting depth. The small mounting depth is what makes the air space requirement so low. Otherwise you have to give up a lot of footspace. Only one sub will fit.

nsxxtreme - thanks for reply, we've traded thoughts on this before on 'Prime.
I may try a new 8" or even 10" in this box behind the seat before I attempt to build a new one for the footwell - this speaker is just a cheap piece of junk

If I did it again I would probably use a JL8w6. I have a set in my truck and they sound decent. They still have a rather large mounting depth. Here is what I have. I think this speaker does good for woofer duty but sucks for a sub.

Rcurley know of any other speakers that match this criteria?

I have also heard the Nakamichi is a good sub for the NSX.

JL8W6 discontinued - it had a mounting depth of 4.25" which I think would work in that box if I could find one .......
Only JL 8" other than monster large W7 in 8" is the W3v2 - any comments on that one?
Quality 8" subs are hard to find!

WoW! I didn't know they got discontinued. Have you checked your local audio store to see if they have any left over. I could check mine if you would like. Just checked my local shops nothing.

What actual driver is that - the one you call a "cheap piece of junk." It looks fairly old, I'd be interested in what it actually is...

Yes, the decided to dump the original W6 line, except for the 10's and 12's that they brought back as a special edition that are floating around.

So what is the max depth and about how much space can you squeeze out?

Have you thought about a few of those Focal subs or even a 6W0 ported? It's not ideal, but I have absolutely no clue what you guys consider to be "small" or "shallow"

Of course with shallow, the ND series is the first that comes to mind. I liked the ND series when I heard them...what's the exact problem with them?

It's an ID8 - not much else to reference a version # - since v3 is now available I assume this is a v1 (since it is undesignated)
Problem is major distortion when I try to drive any power at all into it to make it significant volume (I'm talking moderate here, not rap pounding blow your ear drums stuff)

The ND series is made by Illusion Audio - since discontinued. It's the woofer that nsxtreeme is unhappy with....It mounts the motor structure in front of the cone, rather then behind it to save mounting depth.

Hmmm....so 0.75 cubes.....that mounting depth is bad....let's say you could glass the back half of the box, that would save you 0.5" at least, then a 3/4" baffle gives you a total depth of around 5.5"....so you are really looking for a woofer with around 4.5" of depth....

It's still way too shallow for any 10" that I can think of, besides the Illusion.

8"s are an option, I know the original 8W1 and an 8W3 will fit. The ID8v3 is a bit too deep for that location. The CDT MS-100 is an option (i think). I'm not sure on the depth, but IIRC they are pretty shallow. You can squeek an 8W3v2 in there as well. There is no 8w6v2

If you have the same amount of area on each side, you can grab 4 of those 6W0's and try to make up for the size by just running a bunch of them. They have 75W of handling, so that may work out.

Have you thought about 8"s in the doors? I have no clue if that's even an option (i'm not super familiar with the car) so I'm just throwing out options.

Why not grab a pair of IB4 8's out of a pair of BMW 3 series stealthboxes, and put them in the doors! It would probably mean a bunch of custom fab, but it sounds like you may be up to the task....just an idea. Even in a low power application, those are really efficient drivers, and you could have some sweet stereo bass. Then throw the comps in kickpanels.

Like I said, I'm kinda shooting in the dark b/c I don't know the car or that factory sub very well.

Hope that helps.

And let me know what sub that is....the ID on in that picture.

That must be a V1 ID - but the color logo on the cone stumps me....the color cones really came in on the IDQv2's. The original IDQv1's had the logo on the cone, but no color. Same with the ID's - no color on the cones....so I though...oh well.

That must be a very old sub. I just used those ID8's and they shocked me, but they don't go quite as low as I would want but I threw them in a 0.35 cube box....so they are rather small - I think if I could have squeezed 0.5 for each they would have played a lot flatter then they do. Too bad, I just sold a pair of IDQ DVC 8"s that would have been perfect for you. You could have squeezed both of them in there.

Sorry I can't be of more help with this one...

Actually been very helpful rcurley ....

How about this Focal
http://www.focal-america.com/c...2.pdf

I make the mounting depth 121.5- 8 = 113.5 ~ 4.5"

Never Mind ....... It's $600!!!!

In my case the two kinda have to go together. You need shallow mounting depth and low air space.

The ND 10 makes an excellent mid bass driver but it is a really poor subwoofer. I am still working with mine to try to make it sound better but am not having much luck. I want to try to port it but have no where to put the port. The 10 takes up the entire front of the box.

What is the mounting depth of the Nakamichi, this is what I have heard works best in the NSX. Have you talked with Craig on Prime? He has a lot of experience with the NSX. He is who makes the custom FRP replacement for the dash so you can mount an aftermarket stereo (SOS sells it). He also is the one I got the info about the ND10.

These guys make some neat stuff, excellent reviews. Having a hard time finding the subs but they have extremely low volune requirements & low mounting depth - 4" even for the 10">
I was considering focals for the doors, but now considering these - wish I could hear them

Those are the ones I was talking about.....try thezeb.com - they used to sell them for 99 a piece.

What are you going to use for the doors? I used a set image dynamics CXS62 for the doors because the tweeter mounts nicely in the speaker so I don't have to cut holes in the door panels or create custom brackets.

I just went completely nuts - just bought the competition series ES-620 CDT-audio; they had the 2002 series on sale for $450 at the zeb, which is $340 off - & these things are usually like $20 off at most.
OK, so I haven't heard them but the reviews are excellent - don't think I can go wrong. http://www.cdtaudio.com/620testreport.htm
I was going to get Focal K2's but just ante'd up for these.
Now - if I can find the sub .......

As I recall it sounded pretty good, but I was more looking at the aesthetics than the sound quite honestly - haven't seen him in bit but next time I'll check it out more closely.
So what enclosure are you currently running your sub in - I had assumed you just got the sub & box from Craig .....
