Alarm MODIFICATION/UPGRADE question
So I got an alarm, and I'm liking everything about it except the motion sensor is kind of weak. I am wondering if there is a way to replace the sensor for something more sensitive or perhaps add on more sensors.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Make and model of the alarm please.
Motion sensor?????, I don't know of any alarm that still uses a motion sensor.
Maybe you mean proximity sensor, sometimes called a motion sensor, or maybe an impact sensor, most alarms nowadays come with a dual stage impact sensor, not really effected by motion.

Prestige is the make and I'd rather not diclose the model.
Impact sensor, ya you know what I'm talking about.
The guy who installed it for me said there were two types or as you call "stages" if you want to keep the nuances straight, and I got the more sensitive one. However, it takes a lot of impact for the alarm to go off and seems kind of useless against good thieves I would think. So I was wondering if I had options. (I'd ask my install but that cannot be till another few days).

shock sensors are worthless, replace it with something worth use. Such as.. glass break sensor, proximity sensor, tilt, etc. Plenty of recommendations in the stickied threads.
Where is the shock sensor mounted? This is key.

The installer is a pro, and he said "in the front" I'm sure he knows where he drives a civic.
I have to agree and I'm liking the proximity sensor.
I've been doing some homework and it seems as if I can just splice the 3 wires on my impact sensors and that's about it... am I right? any tips?

what he said. Proximity sensor will require some precision tuning but it's worth it. Suspended Hatch and Wrx-killer-sti-eater have provided details in the stickies (and cause for the alarm).
Do not get the DEI unit, get this: http://www.crutchfield.com/App...p=153

The impact sensor is not installed properly or it is not adjusted properly or both.
I have installed more then a few Audiovox/Prestige systems and on all of them the impact sensors have worked very well.
If installed and adjusted properly you should be able to kick a tire without anything happening, kick it real hard or hit the cars body or glass "softly" and the pre warn should trigger, crack a lug nut on a tire should trigger the alarm into full alarming mode or at the very least trigger pre warn, any "hard" hit on the car should trigger full alarming mode, you should not need to break the glass to trigger full alarming mode.
Adding another sensor, as opposed to replacing the shock sensor, is a good idea, the more layers the better, I would add a proximity sensor, even a tilt sensor, however they will also be ineffective if not installed and adjusted properly, and as mentioned by B18C_EJ8 any sensor you add to the same input must be diode isolated, [triggers] from each other.
Maybe your model has an extra sensor input, IM me the model number and I can help a little more.
You also need to find out exactly where and how the impact sensor is mounted.

They are not worthless, that's like saying alarms are worthless, you said it yourself...

sorry, I shouldn't have said worthless.
I commute and park in a parking garage, being that their designed to vibrate, it caused too many false alarms. I messed with location and sensitivity but nothing worked effectively, could never find a good balance. Oh well, to each and their own. I personally love my tilt and proximity sensors.
