No, it isn't. A car is quite possibly the worst stage for sound quality. Ever.
To make it happen you need a deck that is 5.1 capable and a center channel. That's it. Example of such is a kenwood kvt817.
My deck is 5.1 capable, but I can't justify hacking up my dash for a couple reasons -
1. Resale value
2. With time alignment I get a phantom center channel anyways

except that 5.1 only serves a purpose for movies and DVD-A or SACD. I'm not aware of any DVD-A or SACD players currently on the market for a car and who honestly sits in their car and watches a movie.

if im not mistaken isnt 5.1 just 5 speakers and 1 sub? y in the world would u want 5 speakers in your car? you could do it without a 5.1 head unit too i mean all u would need to do is get a low powered amp and put the 5th speaker in a box and run it to the head unit using rca's but y would u want that? makes no sense to me.

Do some research buddy. In DTS etc, the 5 speakers aren't all playing the same thing. It is designed to give a surround sound experience.
In most 5.1 setups, the center channel does ~ 70% of the work
