Default Something Different-Honda Powered

So I decided to do an engine and drivetrain swap on my race car. In comes the LS-Vtec turbo.
The car is a little Daihatsu Charade.

Real narrow rails meant that that engine and box have to be solid mounted. It all fitted really tight like 5-10mm clearence at the best in some areas. The chassis rail near the alternator needed some shaping with heat and hammer. I made my own mounts and did all the aligning my self. Agricultaural steel mounts used lol.

Front engine mount:

Side gearbox mount:

Gearbox torque mount:

Rear mount:

The rear mount has had some gusseting done since the pics were taken.
I want to get a l/h engine torque mount made also.
I had the front spindle inner splined recut to suit a TRD Toyota outer c.v which is much larger than standard. The inners are normal Honda. Billet shafts have been made locally with corresponding inner and outer splines.

So it sits in the engine bay. Front pulley is shaved and still very close to the rail.
Was fitted with the standard manifold as I knew if this fitted then the Edelbrock one would with no hassles to.

Just the usual ramhorn manifold made with a Tial 60 gate.

The gate will obviously vent through the bonnet. I could route a dump for it but I hat it when things start to get cluttered.

Dual backdoor front mount made. I hate seeing piping comming out of the sides of coolers. Just looks untidy and messy. To help I used Wiggins Clamps so there is no silicone. I am not a fan of that look also.

Oh by now you are probably thinking there aint much room for a radiator at the front with that gate there. Well I have done a rear mount radiator set up. I had a large custom one made. It has two 2700cfm Spal fans on it. Water pump is an electrtic Davies Craig unit mounted to the tank. From there the inlet and outlet piping run through the rear and exit where the tunnel begins.

To get the air out it goes through the tail gate like the Dahlbach Golf.

The transition from the rad to the tailgate is made with the exit duct that I am in the process of making. I have never done any molding before so this is taking some time. This is a plug for the part and is what the shape will roughly look like.
Once I am happy with the shape I will lay up a mould to make the final part out of carbon fibre.

While at it I fitted a 25 row oil cooler with thermostat. Had to mod the fittings on the cooler to clear the front bar.

Here is a few pics of the engine all dummied in place with some other bits fabbed like the catch can and the rail bars. Have a high powered solid mounted engine in a car that it is not designed for worried me. So to save rails craking I tought I may try this.
The engine has Darton MID sleeves, ERL 5 main gurdle, Wiesco pistons, Manley Turbo Tough rods, Gt-30 turbo with Tial v-band stainless housing and all the other bits and pieces needed.

Apart from this I still have to make the gear shift set up. Because of the cooling pipes running through the tunnel I am limited by space so will have to run a set up like this...

Also I have to fit Naca ducts to the rear quarters to feed air for the rad. That is simple enough tough.

The rest of the car was sorted with the previous set up.
ECU wise I have a MoTeC m800.
Ignition wise there is a MoTeC 4ch CDI with mercury coils which have been fitted COP.
Dash wise I have a MoTeC ADl logger display.

Suspension wise I have DMS 50 coil overs. They are bump/rebound and height adjustable.

Brakes are Hi-Spec four piston calipers with Alcon 300mm curved vane rotors(alloys hats).
Pedal assembly is a Tilton 600 series floor mount 3 pedal set up which I am just in the process of fitting.

There are other bits and pieces also. I will keep it updated if people are intersted.

Well originally it had the standard issue engine all but built with internals and and turbo etc. I was running a dog box but kept on breaking it. It was a constant head ache so i wanted something from a FWD car with an alloy block and decent gearbox. It came down to Honda.

They make great power more than what i really need and have a decent gearbox.

Pulled my finger out and did some bits tonight.

The shafts and c.v's trial fitted. Billet shafts look so nice and much larger than the standard charade ones.

The steering column dummy mounted and ready for permanent fixing. Yes it is five inches further back!
