SHG_Felliphe's EG Hatch Build Thread
sweet! i just went through the whole thread.
your car is very clean. and i can't wait to work on my eh3 when all the funds come in.

BTW HBK, if you're still looking to follow an oem theme, I came across these
If I'm not mistaken, these were the oem optional wheels for the si's
Updates:
So lets pick up where I left off. Here are the pictures I took from when I changed my short shifter. Its more or less a DIY too haha. It was pretty simple to do, just took some time, maybe 1 hr if you work quick but I took my time and took 2 including setting it up and jacking it up. I'd say its a 4/10 in difficulty/effort.

Jack up the car safely on all sides.

Pop this cap off.

Then remove the shifter console and you will see this, remove that.

Then remove that too.

Under the car you need to remove the 2 12mm bolts that hold the shifter bushing.

I then took off the rubber hangers and a stuck the wrench in one side and the ratchet in the other, this held the bolt in place not to spin.

Next you need to drop the shift linkage, otherwise its way to cramped to change it. Its only 1 bolt anyways.

Wiggle it out of there and this is what you get!

Remove these 2 bolts with a ratchet and vice grips to remove the shifter from the linkage.

Side by side.

Next lube up the shifter ball part and slide the dust seal up in the shifter. Make sure it goes up the right way.

Tighten it back up.

Then get the linkage tighten up at the front too.
Replace the 2 bolts at the back too and preferably with a new shifter bushing.
Then from there just put the boots back on and the shifter console and thats it, pretty straightforward.

A few weeks before that I went to the HONE meet and chilled with the Fresh2Death guys too. It was cold as hell too lol, prob like 20F.

That was that. A few weeks after that I was driving and all of a sudden my clutch was dropping to the floor, not sure what was going on but I had to lift it up with my feet. Next thing you know Im at a stoplight and can't get into gear! Managed to engage it and stopped at a gas station and my clutch reservoir was dry so I got some fluid and put it in there. It was still bad but I was at least able to shift then. Got home and bled it and it was alright.
My car was full of salt and whatnot and I had to wash it and I was able to do so inside my garage. I used 5 gallons of water and that was enough to wash it and rinse it. Basically just got a panel wet and used my wash mitt lightly on it then repeated with fresh soapy water to make sure it wasn't spreading dirt around scratching it. It was cold but not too bad, def worth it. I cleaned the wheels after the pics too for good measure

Got a new camera charger so I can now continue to using my camera and not have to resort to using the iPod's camera.

Next up was the radio harness, I wanted to clean it up a bit.
Got this too, came in handy!

Finished product, I would of heat shrinked the connections but my tubing wasn't small enough but not big deal.

Took my spoiler out as well, wanted to clean it up a bit, it was quite filthy with wax compound. The other thing I did was use the heat gun to bend the right side down; it always stuck out too much out of the body lines. I was able to get it to curve more and fit the body nicer.

Also managed to get the brake light cover to sit flush! It didnt quite attach right before.

Also cleaned up the wires the same way as the harness.
Tonight I was actually able to change the oil as well, which reminds me that I never posted the last time I had done it lol 242,998 now

Noticed my clutch reservoir was empty again....so this is where its going huh?

So its the slave cylinder thats leaking, I'll have to replace it soon, its only like 15 bux or so and easy to replace. Phew! A lot of dirt and purple stuff came out
. I cleaned it up and then bled the system again. Should last me a few weeks.
Also got a suction cup mount for my iPod touch so I can record some driving in HD. I'll take a video soon. Not bad for $5 shipped lol.

Another thing that happened a while back was I wanted to take out my bucket seat for the winter because it gets cramped when I'm wearing a bunch of layers of clothing and I didn't want to have snow go in it or get it faded by rushing to get in. Turns out if barely even snowed this season
but whatever. I tried to put the stock seat back in and it just wouldn't lined up, i tried a bunch of diff configurations with the rail's positions and other things but didn't work. I think its because I used it as a seat for like a week and it must of bent the tabs a bit
. I was able to push it down enough to get the bolt in but I ended up going in at an angle and actually snapped the head. So I'll have to get a new bolt and drill that one out somehow.
Just my luck!

Not a major update but it keeps you guys updated haha. I'll be redoing the first post tomorrow at some point too.

OEM Stanley came in silver housing with clear or yellow fogs
Thanks dude appreciate it, I feel the same way about the funds part lol.
I don't ever recall seeing those so I can't say but I don't think they were the optional but I could be wrong.

Oh and a shot of the garage. Looks a bit cramped but I've since cleaned it up a bit. I'd like to move a lot of stuff out of there but the basement needs to be cleaned up and most of that stuff isn't mine so I can't touch it otherwise I'd move it there :-/
Its alright to work on though!
Thats in the works! I'm getting my first Spoon part for my birthday so right now I'm leaning towards the Spoon N1! I can't wait to have a duckbill, the one I had before just didn't fit right and I wanted a CF one so the Spoon fits the bill! I'm really going to try to get that early this year too.
Yeah from what I've heard from the cars that had it at the SHG meets it sounds like its perfect.
Better ones to follow hopefully haha. We'll have to hit it up sometime when the weather gets warmer

I'll probably get that today actually, might even make a run to Harbor Freight Tools
Yeah I need to get more sizes of heat shrink. You don't really need it for that but it makes it look better and encloses it better.

As for those wheels, all the proof I got is that I saw an Si for sale with them and the rest of the car was stock so I figure they're oem.
If only I had the knowledge of how to work on my car, I'd pull something similar to what you're doing. Where'd you learn so much bro, you in school for mechanics or something?
Cars lookin' so good. Tinted windows fit right in unless your not feelin' the blacked out look.

You should try man, I'm learning as I go along. I do research every time before I tackle a project. I don't know everything but I know plenty about everything in general and enough to call someone out trying to bullshit me haha.
I'm self taught, I didn't take any courses for it or anything. I can guarantee you that you can do what I'm doing, it all becomes very clear once you attempt it. Its part of why I picked this car, its just about as easy as it gets. Its like legos haha. Feel free to ask any questions if you have any, I don't mind helping out. Thats also a part of why I wanted to make a build thread. I figured there are a lot of people who could learn something from itl

I found some super nice pictures from when I picked up my car from the bodyshop. It was on a friends camera, I'll post them later tonight!

Why's that? Not big enough?
I didnt even realize you had a Spoon N1 until I got a ride in it! First set of recaros I sat in
It sounded OEM but like just deep and not too loud. Exactly what I'm looking for. i hope it works out with my setup.
I saw your parts lists too, looks good! You're looking into a lot of power aren't you, I was a bit surprised to tell you the truth! Its crazy how they can put out that kind of power in NA form.

Yeah I actually wouldn't mind doing some tints, something light though, not too dark. I just wont get one right now because its completely unnecessary and the money could always go to something else. Maybe in the future I could try it out but probably won't even bother. If anything JDM bronze would hit the spot

This thread's impressive, you've gotten your 24x,xxx mileage si running better than my 75k si. That's just

Lemme start things off with the tools:
what type of tool kit did you get to start off (brand, # of parts, any other details etc.)? I'm talking general maintenance type tools and whatnot. I'm guessing an array of different size wrenches but what's a toolkit w/o them, right?
Thanks, appreciate the help but now I'm probably going to be posting MAD questions to this thread (title change to tech support)

I basically found a bag full of metric sockets and a ratchet which pretty much is all I started with but that was pretty useless and missing sockets. There were also some random metric/imperial wrenches. It was enough to get me by for a little while though.
Basically going in this build I knew that I am was going to get tools as I needed them, that way I wouldn't buy tools without needing them. Now I have a pretty good idea of what I should of gotten (and still dont have lol) and I can give you some outlook.
The first thing I would get is a decent quality 1/4'' drive ratchet and a 1/2'' drive ratchet. Thats my main tool. Then get yourself a nice METRIC socket set with everything up to 18mm should do you fine. Most of the bolts you'll encounter will be 8mm,10mm,12mm or 14mm so it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a separate extended sockets in the future. I have an extended 10mm and its helpful in more ways than one such as getting to a tight fit. An extension adapter is a must too and usually comes with the set. Typically the sockets are 6pt which is good but there are also the 12 point though they are more likely to strip a bolt.
Theres also these ratchets which fold in half and are pretty long, you might want to pick that up when you start working on some heavier bolts. The extra long leverage will help you get enough force to break the bolt loose and are more heavy duty. Another important item to get at one point is a torque wrench. Those allow you to torque down bolts to a certain specification so that you don't over tighten/under tighten or break bolts/strip threads.
You can probably find a ratchet/socket set at Sears or Harbor Freight Tools. Theres always deals on them. The sockets will probably fit 3/8'' drive as they common. I use an adapter on my 1/2'' ratchet so that all 3/8'' sockets fit. The difference between the 1/2'' ratchet and the 3/8'' is mainly just the size, the 1/2 is bigger and will have more leverage/torque for harder to remove bolts.
So now that you have a nice ratchet and socket set up, you're also going to need a set of METRIC wrenches. Up to 18mm or so should do it.
Next a set of screwdrivers are a must. You can get a set of Phillips screwdrivers and flathead screwdrivers but you'll mostly just need regular sizes that aren't too big or too small. You can also get one that you can change out the tip that way you just have 1 screwdriver and you can pick whatever size Phillips/flathead tip you need. Those are nice because they also have a ratchet switch so you can change between tightening/loosening and it takes a lot less space than a full set.
Finally a toolbox to keep everything organized would be good at some point.
That should be enough to get you started. Your inventory will expand as time goes on.
Pliers, wire stripper, measuring tape, electrical tape, a good rechargeable flashlight is a must, a can of WD-40 and an hex keyset will come in handy as well.
The cheap ratchets will break if you put enough force and I've had one break on me because it was cheap. You don't have to get top brand name tools especially for basic tools like wrenches. I have a mix of stuff because I don't really care but Snap on, Matco and Kobalt are usually the best out there. My ratchets are Great-Neck and they work good. Some stuff is so cheap that it doesn't matter if it breaks after months/years.
Imports like our Civics use the metric system for bolts so you don't really need any imperial.
Eventually you will come across a stripped/seized bolt and to deal with that get a bolt extractor kit, its pretty much just sockets that bite into the bolt and gets it loose. A hammer can help get it in place.
A good set of 4 jackstands is another thing you can get down the road for when you need to work under the car. Something in which I don't have but need really bad is a floor jack, I just have 2 OEM scissor jacks and they do the trick but are a pain in the ***. Get a good floor jack that has a low profile preferably because otherwise it won't fit under the car if you lower it. You don't have to be that low for it not to fit. Something around 2 inches is good but the regular jack minimum height is around 5''. On that note, make sure to always have a backup when lifting the car, the last thing you want is it to fail and fall on you. I usually will put tires under the car or extra jacks.
Im sure the more seasoned guys here can give you some more tips but you should be well on your way with those tips. Also, your local parts store can rent out a lot of tools for free if you just leave a deposit so make sure to use some of those!
Look at what I started with lol.
