Use of remote starter for engine tests
I've let my '97 Accord sit most of the year as I got around to doing suspension and brake work. (A second car for sure, but one I still care about.)
But now trying to diagnose crank no start situation.
I have a remote starter switch. And I understand it's operation to bump the starter. But want to diagnose the ignition, injectors, etc. Do I use the remote starter with the key in the "On" position? (With tranny in Park.) And then pull appropriate fuses if I don't want it to accidently start? Any risks to watch out for?
It's been hard to Google this seemingly straightforward question...

It is unsafe to test the starter while the transmission is in gear... best to attempt to crank it with your remote starter switch while the shifter/transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
You would want the ignition on. If it’s cranking but not starting first thing I would check is spark. If you don’t have spark and have 12v+ to the black and yellow dizzy wire when the ignition is on 9x out of 10 it’s a bad distributor / coil.
Thank you K7-1Ktrevor.
I've made some kind of progress and, yes, could I had no spark - including directly from the internal ignition coil itself. But swapping the ignition coil for a fresh one didn't change anything. And I found I have no switching signal. So maybe I need a new distributor.
But as now have more defined my issue I created a fresh thread where I've tried to state the things I know.
