Re: K7-1Ktrevor project: All motor d series build into a 2000 Honda insight
Worked on the rear suspension a little bit yesterday. Goal was to convert the rear to motorcycle coilovers and trim the spring buckets off the trailing arms. Unfortunately I don’t think this is gonna work out due to the geometry of the rear shock placement, too much mechanical leverage on it so back to plan B which is cut el rear springs and extended the shock mounting points to where the shock retains the same amount of travel with lowering springs. I did this on my last insight and it worked well.
as I get closer to this project coming together I’ve caught the itch for something actually fast. I’m really hoping this D will scratch that itch when it’s done. If not I may look for a k series eg or crx to turbo. I hope not though as I know things quickly become a bottomless money pit and I already have all the parts for all my projects for like the next year or two.

Well not Honda related but I finally put new gears in my pre runner truck. Went with Yukon 5.13’s in it. They are nice and quiet now. Last gears I ran low on oil and they measured 75 thou of backlash. I also installed a posi in my ls swapped s10, it’s much easier just changing the carrier vs a full gear set. Ended up using the stock shims for the diff just had to hand sand the drivers side one because the limited slip was slightly longer (couple thou) but after sanding it I was able to acheive 6 thou of backlash and a good mesh pattern. Trucks allot more fun now. Took it out for a quick test drive and did a nice cookie at the end of my road. These were some of the projects I needed to get done so I’m happy they are finished so I can focus a little more on the insight now.
Re: K7-1Ktrevor project: All motor d series build into a 2000 Honda insight
We had a wind storm last night and a tree fell on my insight. Luckily my crx wasn’t there as it was parked exactly where the tree landed and just the smaller branches hit the insight. Small dent in the rear quarter and broke the wing. I think I got pretty lucky all things considered.
Re: K7-1Ktrevor project: All motor d series build into a 2000 Honda insight
The tree also broke my tail light. Could have been allot worse though. Pushed the insight back into the shop. I need to redo my front sway bar mounts and shorten the other sway bar link. I have a spark tranny case and blown up block I may use to mock up motor mounts so I can actually make some progress on this car. The machine shop is taking forever on their block.
Re: K7-1Ktrevor project: All motor d series build into a 2000 Honda insight
Head is assembled fully. Blocks still at the machine shop… not a surprise though. Spent some time buffing out some of the scratches from the tree fall. Also put a new tail light in the passenger side and built a little cargo cover for the trunk so it’s flat now with hidden storage. Nothing special but gets the job done and doesn’t weigh much. Crazy how good this looks for 25 year old paint. Don’t mind the mess
also took the stereo and speakers out. I want this car to be a really raw driving experience. I suede wrapped the steering wheel and ordered some aluminum race pedals for the car also.

Got the front suspension sorted. Had to trim the shock towers a little bit to allow the struts to have more camber. I probably need to machine the camber plates for more to get in the 2.5-3* range but I don’t have a good way to measure camber currently so I’m not in a rush to do that. My spring rates will be 10kg/mm front and 5kg/mm rear. The car should be about 64/36 weight distribution front to rear. Also made brackets for the sway bar end links and welded them to the steel coilover bottoms, my original ones didnt turn lock to lock without binding. These do. Front and rear sway bars are adjustable. Can’t wait to start dialing this thing in once it’s running.
