I will probably have to live with it for the moment. The tranny shift smoothly like new, it's just little noisy.

I'm just thinking about it again and again. What's the purpose of the two little springs that are tightened to the transmission housing with a bolt? Cold it be some weak and cause some rattle of something in the tranny? It's #7 in this picture, I can't find the second spring here, but it must be there somewhere:

spring #7 is to push the steel ball # 24 against the shift fork, so it clicks in gear and stay there, I think. Yeah, there should be two of them.

Yep...this spring/ball setup gives the feel of the shifter sliding into gear and staying there...kind of defines the domain of the gear.

So these springs should not be my problem? It's interesting that the noise didn't change after I replaced all the bearings https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

No those springs shouldn't be your problem.

Excellent pics https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif , why can't everyone document this well???

Half the ppl out there say, I have a loud humm, could it be the clutch? um well, I don't know, it could be your lack of information is problem #1. anyway...

My roomate and I have both had a main countershaft bearing go bad. Which one? I don't know, Honda told us that, but either we drive too hard, or they are prone to mechanical failure. I want to lean towards a little of both https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

So... It cannot be the pilot bearing based on your detailed information. Did you check the springs in the clutch? I have a clutch at home with 3 of 4 springs in great shape, and one with "physical" damage. Although mine is very evident, yours may not be.

Also you said the previous owner had a clutch disc blow up? maybe I read that wrong, but check every part of that clutch up and down.

Sidenote on fluids: In my personal experiences I have found a lot more noise coming from my itr tranny when I used 5w30 (penzoil). Bad move. Especially under low speed tight cornering, something would wrrrrrr very loud.

One week ago, I swapped it for Honda MTF, and it purrs very quiet now. Almost silent. And zero added noise under low speed tight cornering. Ah, what a relief...

Just some thoughts and sidenotes for ya... If you do get ambitions to pull that thing off again (I already saw one bloody knuckle https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif ), I would check the clutch and see if it's the culprit.

Also, from the sound of those mp3's, mine is rather loud too, so I don't know how "bad" it really is... Although, it is an mp3...

If my rambling incoherent post makes any sense, let me know.

Junior

Thank you for your appreciation https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif . I always try to document my problems in every detail, it makes the thinking easier...

As for the clutch, I carefully inspected all the little springs on the clutch and all were tight sitting in its place. You are right, the previous owner has a problem with clucth - the clutch disc came into pieces.

I already have Honda MTF, so there is probably nothing better to get.

I'm not planning to drop the tranny in the near future, but I'm open to any ideas of course. The tranny shifts like new, so I will probably wait what happens... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif

how much was all this done to ur tranny? price wise

DaX 09-08-2004 05:37 AM

Replacing every bearing and seal in the thing ran me about $350-$400 in parts. As long as your sliders aren't too rounded, you can pick up a set of carbon coated synchros for around $100 for that fresh-mesh feeling.
