What is the weight difference between the two?
I just weighed the comptech icebox minus filter and boxed to ship at 5lbs.

I read the weight of the box mugen shipped to me on the shipping label at 14lbs.

I then weighed the empty mugen box with all the packing material they used plus anything else I ended up not using in the install and it wieghed 10lbs.

So, 14-10=4lbs for the mugen intake and filter that's installed.

Giving a degree of error on my readings of a few pounds each way, I'd then say the weight of the icebox and the mugen intake are about equal.
Roughly, 5lbs for each. Certainly didn't gain much, if any, with this intake. Like I said, it's fairly light with the fiberglass construction.

Good review man......looks like a quality piece that mugen makes there

I just got myself an icebox and comptech intake for christmas......I hope I'm not disappointed!

Even though I don't think I could bring myself to spending some $600-700 on an intake that uses the stock arm

And like everyone has said.....lets see a dyno comparison!!!

LOL... I doubt they even have a dyno here on the island I live on.

Enjoy the comptech setup. It does make some strong gains. I had a full Comptech icebox/polished arm/filter setup at one time before going to this. I'm sure you'll like it.

Nice review. I just got the Icebox myself but was always curious on how it compared to the m00gen.

Out of interest, what does it sound like?
You know, that's a good question, because in all the time I was pestering people about info on this intake, I never once bothered asking that question and it was only after I had ordered it that I thought about that.

It's like a combination of the Icebox and an AEM CAI. I had a 00 civic si with an AEM on it and it would just wail at VTEC. So much so, I got tired of the loud trumpet noise it would make at WFO. It also seemed to make less power than stock before VTEC.

With the Icebox I had on this car, the intake noise was more subdued and muffled below VTEC. Power gains were broader, too, than the AEM. The top end would be a loud roar with a bit lower pitch than the AEM.

The Mugen, like I said, is a combo of the two. At lower revs(3000), step the gas and there is a low pitched moan/rumble, I guess due to the volume of the intake snorkle compared to the Icebox and it's resonate frequency.
Power/torque feels a lot better at these lower revs than the icebox, too.

When you hit VTEC, it lets out a sharp, crisp, rasping sort of noise that makes you think of F1 cars. Car just sounds downright mean. The power on VTEC is deceptively fast. I have never accelerated as fast with this car as with any of the other intakes and combo of parts that I've tried on the R. Suffice to say, I'm stoked with this intake. It's loud, but not in an obnoxious way. Very pleasing to the ear, if you're a gearhead.

People balk at the cost of this intake, but when you think of it, if you buy 2 or 3 different intakes, to see what they are about, you would have spent as much as I did for this. You can argue that you can sell the others and not lose as much. Well, if/when I sell my car, you can be sure that this intake will be out of the car before it's sold. Let's see what kind of resale value it will have then.

speaking of which, I know someone who might be selling their mugen intake... no, not me. guy is selling his car and will be parting out soon. If interested IM me.

Thanks,
Kelly

KKIM,

Thanks for that very descriptive review. Your comments reflect what I would have expected.

I'll pass on your friends intake as I ordered my own earlier today Should be here in a week or so...

Regards,
