Default Lowering the compression on B18C5

I have all my turbo parts ready to go on my Type-R. I am planning on running the stock internals for a year at most. Untill I can get a GSR block and build that. What are you guys doing about lowering your compression other than Pistons and rods? I hear people use the thick headgasket. Which one is the most reputable? GE, Cometic, etc. And how thick would be good for a nice street setup? Maybe like 10 lbs of boost on a T3T04E 57 trim. Would like to get 300 whp, give or take a few. Thanks in advance.

Then just leave the compression alone if your plans are 10lbs/300whp.

The idea that lowering compression is necessary for turbo builds like yours is outdated and incorrect. All it does is allow whoever is tuning the car a greater margin for error while tuning, in which case you ideally shouldn't be going there in the first place.

Leave your compression as it is and get it tuned by somebody who really knows what they're doing, and you'll be good to go.

I used an HKS headgasket which lowered it to 8.6:1 compression. By lowering compression, you are just decreasing your peak WHP and increasing your longevity. However, with the tuners available today and software, you can still have a reliable setup using stock compression and dyno'ing over 300whp.

It's a new h/g in there now. So Im just gonna leave it alone. Any suggestions for a good tuner in MD/PA area. I've dealt with JE and I don't really want to go there But I've heard Tempest Racing would be a good choice. Anyone? Thanks for the help

The best possible way to accomplish this is by signing up for Expo

Stock head gaskets are already 3 layer, so going with Cometic really doesn't drop it much.

Just figured I'd beat the point to death a little more.

Like everyone else had said, get a good tuner. I've been running on stock internals for a long time

A headgasket lowered your compression a point and a half? how many fingers thick was it? lol. or did i just not understand that and there was other things done to the internals and the HKS HG was the final piece that got it to 8.6:1?

Also, Evans Tuning is in PA, well worth it.

Yes, 1.5pt. The headgasket was pretty thick. If memory serves but dont quote me on this, it was 3mm. It is now discontinued but yes, compression was 8.6:1 with just a headgasket alone.

Jeff is amazing, has a lot of experience.

For 300WHP don't change a thing. Its a waste of money. Plus is you change the head gasket your gonna need cam gears too (thicker gasket changes valve geometry).

As long as you have a good tuner you'll be fine

The head gasket will be the weak point in your setup. Do it right and get some forged pistons and rods.
