Legally - no because of the 25 years rule here in the US

But this hasn't prevented people from doing it in other ways ... but legally no

The only CDM R that can legally be imported into the US is 97,98,00,01. There are 99 CDM Rs but you won't be able to
Import those because the R wasn't sold here in the US. I think you can start to see a trend.

You will need a title transfer to take ownership of the car which differs from province to province, you can call their DMV to ask (they are super nice compares to US DMV). You will also need a compliance letter from Acura which the seller should help furnish along with a letter from the dealership saying the car is recall free.

The rest is all importation paperwork and transfer. You can use authorized importers (check NTHSA) to help with paperwork and it should cost around 1000. Then you have to decide if you want to drive it here yourself, or ship it which can cost around 2300 to 3000 using an enclosed container. You also have to pay duty and some other fees.

The information in the original post is so unbelievably rediculous, that I can't belive it. Who in their right mind would crash test one of these cars (never mind 4), to have one! That would be horrible. Also, I can't believe they would make it so incredibly difficult to import a car. Or maybe I can. Just stupid.

You should look into Motorex and what they did, and didn't do, to get Nissan Skylines both approved (R32's), and banned ( R33 / R34's ) by NHTSA.

I never said it was a guarantee. I've also stated that there are plenty of people driving illegal GMVs and getting away with it. Its rolling the dice. If I still lived in Mississippi, I would get a 98 spec ITR. But I dont, I currently live in California and yes they're ***** out here about imports in general.

And Advan, I hope for you and your badass MR ITR, you never get your car impounded/crushed.
This thread does contain some great info, maybe you should have offered the disclaimer up front that you would do it anyway if you lived in Mississippi, seems somewhat disingenuous to scare everyone from doing so, then say that you would do it if you didn't live in Cali. TGFM!!! The reality is that most smaller states couldn't care less, it wasn't an issue for me to register, let the dice roll.

I just read through all 9 pages and wow.. great info. I've been looking into importing a 1998 Honda ITR from Japan because I know a guy who can get one for me and imported for about $5500. One thing that I was not quite clear on as whether or not I can have it imported as a show car for now (if they accept the request) and then in 2023 once its 25 years old, give it a regular registration for normal road use.
Thanks for the great write-up!!

My neighbors had a legitimately registered '98 Spec ITR in NJ since 2009. It's all who you know.

You can get any of these JDM Honda Type-Rs into Canada as they only have a 15 year rule and no requirement that the model not have been made for the Canadian market in the past.

Have it registered in Canada then drive it across the border. I drove a Canadian car in California for years. No issues ever.
