Default Coilover choices

Which brand or model of coilovers do you think is good for an ITR?

Im planning to go on race track once 1 or 2 months. Budget is within 1500$

Thank you very much

Many people in the ITR community use PIC coilovers

I've used stock (great for learning on track), PIC select R3's and I'm currently building up a set of Koni/GC coilover sleeves.

If this is your first time, I'd suggest learning the car first and invest more in pad's/rotors/fluid and tires.

x2...Agreed

after 3 track events and 9yrs of ownership, its time to upgrade. Koni yellow/ground control(500F/400R) are waiting to be installed.

I rate Showa and so I went for some Mugen Gold 5-way adjustables.

Eibach/Bilstein are one of the other companies I would advise looking into for mid-range/high-end stuff.

I ran a koni yellow/ground control set up for a couple years on my old 97R and REALLY loved them.

I'm currently running the old Spoon N1 coilovers and honestly, I'm not sure which I like better! I will say the Spoon N1s ride significantly softer on the lowest dampening setting but I haven't taken my ITR to the track with the Spoon set up yet. You really can't go wrong with KY/GCs.

AMR or koni/gc

you might be able to get a set of AMR's for 1500, very seat setup that can be tailored to your wants. also 100% rebuildable.

the koni/gc combo $4$ is basically impossible to beat. lifetime warranty and your choice of spring rates. the resale value of koni/gc is excellent and they will last as long as you own the car. i've put 60k miles on mine and still have not needed a rebuild yet

I think ill keep the stock suspension for now. Will see how it does after a couple track days. How much is the Koni/GC btw?

Depends on which ones you are getting. The basic Koni Yellow setup with GC sleeves and Eibach springs will run you about 900 bucks. Right now the standard Koni's are 20% off. You cannot run very stiff rates with these OTS koni's and if you are not incredibly serious about tracking they are probably a good starting point.

If you are serious about tracking and are willing to spend more and make more of a compromise on your street ride comfort, then you can get the Koni 8041 Race which are shortened stiffer valved versions of the OTS konis. These can handle much stiffer rates out of the box and are about $1300 with the sleeves and springs.

New, as I'm piecing them together...

Koni's are $450-$550 depending on if they are on sale at the given moment.

GC sleeves are $330 with custom spring rates or $289 OTS. I'd recommend custom rates.

Also, with this setup either you use your stock OEM Top Hats, or for a little more (like $30 a side) you buy new OEM top hats and sell your stock stuff and recoup about $250 for the OEM ITR suspension.

At the end of the day, and if you sell your stock stuff you'd have way less than a grand into it all.

I've been running Koni Yellow/ GC's for about 6 years now and have no plans of changing. Great for the street and the track. Just don't go too crazy on the spring rates if it is a street car.

Oh and to add to what Dave B said about selling stock parts. Be careful as some of the stock suspension components have been discontinued. For example the rubber bushings in the stock tophat are no longer available from Honda. I had to buy a set from King.

as for rates and the konis, it depends on how you like the car to be setup. there's no real "limit" to how much spring you can put on them but the cars are faster with a good deal of rear rebound. that said most people {including myself} feel that roughly 500lb/in is about the limit of the stock koni sports out back. i have 450s in the back of my car and the shocks are set just off full stiff out back.

the fronts on the other hand are plenty for 600-700lb/in, then again the front usually is ran with less rebound than the rear

on another note you really don't want to be over 500lb/in if it's a street car anyway, 500 is stiff, really stiff for a DD. for a track car it's on the softer side. again, all depends on the setup and goals

Oh and I just got some info from Heel Toe Automotive that even though the ITR specific part number for the tophat bushings has been discontinued, that the same bushings are used in the TL Type-S, S2000 with a different part number. I have not confirmed first hand that they will work, but I plan on trying it.

Fairly sure S2000 upper hat bushings work.

I've been running these for about 5 years and haven't had any problems. They are only single adjustable but unless you are tracking all the time and trying to squeeze every second out (ie wheel to wheel racing), they work just fine.

Craig - who would only get double adjustable if it was externally adjustable.

^^^haha, another 3rd person speaker.

I've heard good things about the Eibach R2 coilovers. Rob did a nice review on these. It's not on an ITR, but the review talks about the adjustability and how it affects lap times. I think it's worth a look. My ITR is stock, but my DB8 has Koni/GC and I'm happy with the way it performs.

KW Variants? I Haven't used on the track before but it's very nice on the streets. Used set for 600 on NWP4 if you're looking.
