What is clear coat?
This guy is offering me $80 for doing clear coat on my car. He works for Honda and just did clear coat on my brother's CRV. I saw the guy putting clear coat on and it looks just like regular wax. He applied 3 layers and it looks exactly like he just waxed the car. Can someone tell me what is the difference between clear coat and regular wax??
there are various compounds out there to help reduce maintenance on the paint.
bottom line, nothing beats washing once a week, and a good wax like Zaino

the difference between clear coat and wax... wax just makes your car shine for a temporary time period. clear coat is what makes your car shine. lets say you went to a body shop and got your car painted and they didn't put a clear coat on the paint would look all dull. clear coat also protects the color of the paint from the sun. also when you get minor scratches on your paint, most of the time you can just buff out the minor scratches instead of having to get a whole newpaint job. the more layers of clear coat painted on the more shiny the car will be. $80 is cheap for doing a clear coat, but it alos depends on the brand. there are cheap brands (looks yellowish) and the better quality ones (are clear like water.
good explanation...
but for $80 he's not getting a clearcoat. he's getting a "clearcoat" I've seen the stuff they put on there. Varying on the compound it can last quite a while. It works, but isn't the best.
Zaino = synthetic "clearcoat" if you will.

You cannot add clear coat to car that has not had the base coat painted. Too much work wasted to have the job come out all fogged up. It's a waste of time. Hondas / Acuras use a single stage paint job from the factory that looks like a clear coat. after a while the paint will fade or wear out depending on the care given to the car. It seems that maybe you just need a good compounding on the paint to try to get the shine back. Then you want to wax it after that.
