I am thinking about swapping in some CTR or ITR cams into my '96 GSR. Anyhow to the question at hand. I know that you need the intake/exhaust cams and springs. My question is do you need to get Type R Valve Spring Retainers or are they the same as a GSR? I think they are different but if a man can save a few $ and use his GSR retainers I think that would be the way to go. Any help.. BTW I tried searching but could not find an answer... Thanks.... Also I am looking to buy this setup,,,,,
Well, one, you dont need both cams. The intake really is the most important...obviously its more beneficial to have both. Next, you dont need valvesprings or retainers to run them. Once again, they are beneficial, but only if you intend on revving higher (which means youll need an ecu). If you are going to get a chipped ecu, then I would just find some ITR guy on here that is selling his ITR cams, springs, and retainers (typically they will replace all of them). Best of luck.
all the b series retainers from the ls motor up to the type r are the same. don't believe me go ask your acura dealer or look it up on acuraautomotiveparts.org. they are all the same. you need the itr intake springs if you want to go to 8400. the exsisting gsr intake springs can be swapped over to the exhaust side and be used with the r exhaust cam without any worries. if you are going to go higher than the stock gsr redline i would suggest hondata ecu management. if you are going to go higher than the stock type r redline(some people have stated that the r cams can be pulled slightly higher than stock redline and still make power, but i have yet to see this firsthand) i would suggest some type of other cam because they will produce more power for than the oem cams at the higher redline areas. you've got a lot of reading to do as to how our engines work

if your plannin on getting ITR cams then i say go for it they are like MILD cams for street.....you really don't need valve springs and retainer...if your plannin on getting like ITR valve train...think about it for a sec are you gonna upgrade the cams again later on... if so just get like a skunk2 valve springs and retainer...and get it installed so your don't have to go back later on and take out the ITR's and swap it for the Skunk2, Crower etc...plus those aftermarket springs and retainer are really strong...

Thanks for the replies. I knew that you could swap the intake springs over to the exhaust side when doing this type of cam swap. I intend to raise the rev. limiter to no more than 8400-8500. I will either be running a rechipped P28 or try to find an ITR or CTR ecu to use. I am going to swap the intake in favor of a Skunk2 or something like that eventually to take advantage of the ecu swap. I will put them both on @ the same time of course to keep from getting a CEL for the IAB
. I will be using a JDM Civic SiRII non-LSD trans and i think this cam/trans combo should be good for a daily driver car. Other mods include a DC 4-1 1 piece header, AEM CAI, and a high flow cat w/cat back exhaust. Again thanks for the help guys....
