Default Tips for breaking-in a head

The shop's finally done with my head so I'll be putting it on tonight. Since I couldn't find someone local to port it, all they did was a valve job and clean it. Is there anything special that needs to be done to get it ready? Or, anything that should be done after it's put back together?

Apply assembly lube to the cam journals, rocker arms, and valve stem tips. They should have greased the valve guides. Prepare to crop dust when you fire it up.

Putting back together a head. Doesn't really take much to it. It's all about just putting enough lube on the camshaft journals, you have to put Honda bond on those rings that goes around the camshaft. I'm not sure what it is called. Someone here should be able to correct me on this.

Make sure you clean out any oil &/or coolant that may have gotten down into the head bolt holes. (its much easier to dip a rag down there while the head is off the car)

As far as break in, there's nothing special you need to do once its on and you get it running. You might want to change the oil a bit sooner than the 3k mark for you first post-headjob oil change.

Thanks for all the help. I've already made a short "To Do" list. Now, I'm on my way to google "Honda bond."

umm make sure everything thing is lubed, prime the oil system(disconnect dizzy, unplug ecu fuse....crank engine for a few seconds) then run listen for noises, drive for a while, then let cool and check valve clearance. are your cams or rockeres new? if not then there is no need for a break in on the old componets.

new cams and rockers your let idle at 2k for about 15-20 mins.

Could I use something else besides Honda Bond? I really need to finish this tonight and I don't think I can acquire any in time. I did manage to come across some Crower 402s but couldn't find any springs/retainers so I'm going to wait on those. I've never primed an oil pump, but it dosen't sound too hard. You just unplug the distributor, pull the ECU fuse and try to start it a few times?

yup just crank it to get oil back into the head, you can use rtv sealant too.
