Default stock suspension problem..

1997 gsr.. i just put on 17" motegi MR7s and was expecting the ride height to get higher and need to get lowering springs & struts.. however after i slapped the rims on i noticed that the ride height was already pretty low.. there is about 1/2 - 1inch of a the wheel gap in the back and about 1inch in the front.. it looks great but if i have 2 people in the car or make a sharp turn the rear tires rub.. is this most likely a problem with my struts or springs?

Try rolling the rear fenders.

thanks but that still doesnt explain why it sits so low on the stock springs and struts.. do i need to replace both or just the springs?

It doen't even look low man.

It looks like you got a Integra Tommy Makkinen Edition.

Put some coilovers/struts on that bitch and roll the rear fenders.

yea i think it's at a good height its just that the back tires rub when i hit a bump or make a sharp turn.. rolling the fenders wouldnt do anything there.. the front tires are fine...

What do you think that they're rubbing? The top of the sidewalls of your rear tires are rubbing the inner lip of youre wheelwell. Over time that rubbing will shread your tires.

"Rolling the fenders" just means cutting a portion of that lip (which is not visible) so that it's doesn't touch the tires during cornering. It's crucial if you plan on lowering your car any further as well.

^ no rolling the fenders is just rolling the lip upward so the sharp metal edge doesn't touch the tire and cut it up.

No, your way is the ghetto *** way. You're talking bout using a baseball bat or whatever to roll the lip upward right? This can damage the paint on the outer lip of the wheelwell. I've seen the fender lip paint crack firsthand on an EX, from a "do-it-yourself" roll. I would reccommend getting the fenders cut [either by a shop(=$40) or yourself if u have a rotary saw].

Your tires are too damn big is your problem. You should have no bigger than 205/40-17 with 17" rims. You car actually got higher when you put those babys on! You have less fender gap because you filled up the wells with tires that are too big.

Also, Integras don't have struts. They have shocks. There is a big difference.

Your new tires are about 1.2 inches taller than stock. The width is also tight enough to where it may be causing a problem also. If you roll your fenders it may not fix your problem. You need the right size tires.

i think you have it backwards...

integra as well as many other cars now adays have struts...not shock...

shocks are just the tube...as to struts that have the spring/coil sitting on the strut itself...

I borrowed this from a post by another user, he explains it well:

"Shocks and struts are similar in that they both damp (slow down) the vehicles motion. The key difference of a strut vs. a shock is that a shock only controls the cars motion while a strut is a locating member of the suspension. What this means is that if you remove a shock the spindle or axle will still be completely attached to the vehicle. If you remove a strut the spindle or axle will be able to move outside of its normal motion. Shocks and struts may or may not have a spring mounted to them either. It is often assumed that any damper with a spring is a strut, this is not the case."

I was curious so I checked the factory service manual (they designed the car so they should know) and it calls them dampers. That just sounds to close to dipers for me!

back to the topic

[QUOTE=sfr4dr]Your tires are too damn big is your problem. You should have no bigger than 205/40-17 with 17" rims. QUOTE]

this is correct, you probably have universal rims that were on a 4x114 lug pattern off an accord.
If you bought those new, then they gave you the wrong size tire, and that is why you are rubbing.
rather than ruin your body(rolling your fenders yourself) due to having the wrong size tires, just make the tire correction.

WOW dude, maybe those mickey thompson 33 inchers are your problem

you should be running 205 40's my dawg.

your gears are now longer then they should be, actually slowing you down., your also higher in the air, raising your center of gravity and greatly decreasing handling performance.

maybe you're bouncing on springs and your rear shocks are leaking?
