Default Steering Vibration

I have an '01 GSR w/ 28K miles on it and some Pirelli P7000 195/55 tires on stock rims.

I experience a vibration around 80 MPH that I can feel through the wheel (and see, if I loosen my grip on the wheel). It isn't awful, but I'd like to find potential causes and eliminate this.

Here's what I'm sure it isn't: wheels (rotated these), any specific tire (again the rotation), balance (got the wheels rebalanced when getting them rotated), and alignment (within specs).

Any thoughts about tie rods and the wheel bearings being contributors to the vibration?

Tire design?

Does it vibrate when you are slowing down from high speeds or just when you are going 80 mph?

It isn't warped rotors, either, esp since it is at a constant speed w/ no deceleration applied.

But your point did make me want to mention one other thing, which is that it does this with or w/o the driveline engaged (clutch in or out).

There is the possibility that they weren't balanced well when they did it or that you may have lost a wheel weight since it was done.

SAME PROBLEM....

I had the same problem a while back and after i had new tires put on, the problem dissappeared entirely, so for myself it could have been the tires, balancing, or anything in between but it went away.

However, now that its been like two months, i think the problem is about to come back. I feel very slight vibration in my steering wheel when i'm around 80mph too. I'd be interested as well in finding out what this is caused by.

I watched them like a hawk. The balance was fine unless the machine was fucked up.
I'm sure the balance has changed some, as it will as the tires wear. This is only a month ago, though, and I went to the tire shop specifically to correct this problem.

I think road surface may play a part, as will temp.

I also added 2 PSI above the stock recommendations, F & R, per tire.

I strongly suspect tire design, perhaps followed by the steering linkage design.

I'm planning on checking the wheel bearings and tie rod ends here soon.

Check to see if your balancing weights are all there. If one is missing you could get vibration.

it will be your balancing. Tell them to do a "bulls eye" balance on it. Most machines can do this. When you balance a tire it will show 0.0 on it because they have a little degree of off - balance that is still 'o.k.' but when they turn the **** on it , it will show a more specific or actual balance that can further be corrected. It just requires more time and patience for the tech to do it . I have to ask for this every time I balance my tires on my teg, accord, max, whatever , or it always vibrates at 80k and above. Do this and you'll be fixed.!

Thats just cuz of the AC.. Everything is more sluggish with AC on.. the clutch is worse and acceleration hurts badly when its on.. basically the car is completely different with the AC on

BamaTeg,

Where in Hoover do you take your car for balancing?

I just got this last week too...~80mph vibrates like a MF! As if the steering was loose. I thought bad balancing so I rotated wheels but exactly the same amount so that's not it. Going to shave rotors and do pads tomorrow... It seems to get worse every day though so I hope nothing comes loose for real. I'm thinking mounts might be going bad (80k miles coming up) but you can't feel anything in the shifter....

Anyone solve this?

Also, where do you get the plastic rings that go inside your wheel? I noticed mine didn't come with those....that might be it.

Anyone?

I just resurfaced the rotors and did the brakes. Same vibration is there

I broke a rear suspension piece that did that to me, but I forget what its called... have someone check...do you have any funny tire wear on any of your tires?

I had this prob, and it was definitely the balancing. Rotate tires often and make sure they are balanced each time. The "bullseye" balance was a good suggestion. Make sure the numbers are very close to each other and that they rebalance them each time after adjusting the weights.

I'll go redo the balancing today. The tires/wheels are less than a month old and I just rotated. It is not likely that the rear tires have the same imbalance.

There was a suggestion about a wheel bearing being bad. What exactly is the wheel bearing and how easy is it to look at this and replace it.
