steering rack problem?

I've noticed within the past week that when I rock the steering wheel back and forth slightly, I can hear a clunking or clicking sound under the hood, either with the engine running or not. I raised the front end off the ground and it would not make the noise any more. I tried to see if maybe the steering rack mount bushings were shot but the whole rack seemed tight. I also checked for play in the outer tie rods and they felt tight, as well. Any ideas what could be making this noise? I'm praying it's not an internal problem with the steering rack.
check the yoke, its right where the shaft goes out the firewall. Theres a plastic cover covering it, you can access it from inside. Put your hand on it while you rock the wheel back and forth. See if you feel a clunk.

yeah i took that cover off but it there did not seem to be any play in the joints. I'm pretty sure the sound is coming from the engine bay-side of the fire wall, not inside the car.

Had a mechanic friend look at it today, said it's most likely inside the rack. He carries rebuilt racks from a company that uses all Honda seals in their racks for Hondas, and can get it to me for a pretty good price, so I'll probably just end up pulling the rack in the next few weeks.
