state referee.......
well i got pulled over today by the school police after school for my exhaust..i told him that i had it approve...but then he told me to pop my hood and he had me for a smog device.... hes telling me to go to the state referee to check it out...my question is, if any of you guys ever had this problem and how much does it cost?
also the officer was training someone while i was pulled over....what he told the trainee was "all you need to find is one thing even if its small, give him a citation" to my mind i think it was f'd up just to pulled me over so he can train someone. i hate california police

That's fu*k up dude, but he didn't have the right to pop your hood...Apperently this is happening everywhere, HT member be careful..My cousin just had his hood poped in Long Beach like 2 days, and about 2 weeks ago I was at a meet in the city of santa fe springs, and everyone that was at the meet was getting modified exhaust tickets or tint tickets, and they were poping hoods if you got mouthy...

Omg that is pretty gay. I feel for you I had my old turbocharged Crx pulled over (aem afpr leak) and given that ticket....basically you will have to bring it to the state ref and they are no joke when it comes to making sure that your car abides by the state laws.
One thing I regret is that I let him pop my hood... Next time I will say "Sorry officer I cant let you do that unless that is what you pulled me over for." I know they will try to ticket me for a modified exhaust and work their way up to popping my hood or doing a search. Not this time...
Back to your issue, now there are ways around the state ref...
1) if you know you wont pass... visual and engine...sell the car out of state to someone you know other than a relative
or register the car as non-op. (you have to wait at least a year to register it.)
2) return it back to stock or pass the test with flying colors ( highly suggested because if you pass, you get a nice BAR sticker, which tells any other officer hey I am Beaurue of Automotive Repair approved, leave me alone.)
Remember, if you fail three times they take your car. Also you will pay a certain amount to test it the first time. if you pass...hooray! If fail you will have a chance to make the changes to your car and re-test free. The third time...well I sold my car before I found out...But the person at the State Ref told me they take your car with no re-imbursement. They used to take your car and give you some compensation for it but not anymore I guess...
p.s. can anyone confirm this? Thanks.
BTW GOOD LUCK!

I'm going though that **** right know. # 2 that is. Pain in the a$$. I have a jdm B18c with Blox Stage 2 cams. I had to replace that with stock cams, put a stock air box on, stock exhaust, get a stock ECU, and stock fuel pressure regulator. Worst part was, I had to buy a EVAP Purge Solineord which is not present on the JDM model. I still might fail because my comp is higher than USDM B18c1.
Anyone ever try to tell a cop that they are not giving consent to search under the hood?
If you can do all the mechanical changes yourself, then its not that bad because the ref smog fee is only $30 and you get two cracks at it. They'll check it out and smog it, if it fail, they will give you a list of recommendations and you can come back and test once for free.
Good luck to all of us going through this, I guess.
