Sounds like your starter is bad. One loud click and then nothing? Mine did that, for a while it would eventually start. Like one out of 10 times. Replaced the starter and no problems since. Two 14mm bolts, one 12 or 14mm nut and a clip in plug was all it took. Taking out the intake arm helps thought....

That is a "bypass jump" and if that always works it is unlikely a problem with the starter or starter solenoid, although still possible

Try this...
Repeatedly and rapidly, [about once a second] turn ign. key from run to start.

Have your girl hold the ign. key in the start position as you give the starter motor a sharp tap with a hammer or other heavy tool, [big screw driver].

If either the above works, replace the starter motor. 94

Those starters go bad! if you had a 5sp you can pop start it but eventually you need to get it replaced, imo just get a new starter there not to expensive and best of all your girl will stop crying to you

If thew bypass jump works every time the starter is not the problem, I would look at the A/T gear position switch or the ign. switch itself, the starter cut relay if car has stock security system.

Try putting transmission into neutral when it will not start, see if that works, if so, the problem is the A/T gear position switch., [burnt contacts].

You said all you hear is a "click" when engine does not crank, where is that click coming from and when? 94
