remote start
this might be off topic a little bit but has anyone install remote start on manuel tranny? i know you can but is there any way to bypass the gears? like say you leave it in gear and try to start with remote. usually it will crank and the car will roll but is there any way to bypass that? when you try to start the car in gear, it just doesnt
yes you can. Normally most alarm stores don't want to put remote start in manual cars because its time consuming due to the wiring. They normally have to install a button where the stick would be in gear. In order to start the car, it has to be in neutral and I heard they have to wire the something to the e-brake so your car has to be in neutral + e-brake pulled up in order to remore start your car. Since I knew my alarm guy they didn't bother with it and left mine alone because most car alarm places refuse to install remote start in manual cars because liability crap.
ya u usually turn remote start away when my customers what me 2 install them on a manual.....to much of a headache if they hit something or someone.....my civic has a remote start on it.....i just make sure it is not in gear.
yea i mean i can always try to be safe and leave it in neutral. but theres always ifs. accidents do happen. i know a friend who use to work at best buy. he knows how to install alarms and remote start but i dont think he knows how to bypass the gears. he did the remote start for someone and they ended up crashing that week. so if anyone knows any detail of this. please post

go to the transmission and with a multimeter turn to conti. range. Put one end to good ground and start testing each wire at the trans. if one goes to ground only when it is in neutral hook the neutral saftey switch wire (usually on DEI remote starts it is the small black/white) to it.

I think he means with a manual transmission. I believe there is no wire that will tell you if its in neutral or in gear (except reverse) to wire up to.

I've got a turbo so I use my remote start as a turbo timer. All you NA guys should do this too. Hot oil sitting on an engine and it's bearing is never good. Before I shut off the car I just hit the start button and that keeps the car running when I take the keys out. It'll run for 2 minutes and then shut off. With this way I know FOR SURE that it's not in neutral as well
I also have engine start on my integra but i dont have tha gear bypass. I'm use to leavin my car in neutral so im okae. but i heard compustar has the gear bypass engine start where it wont start in gear. not positive tho. but i love my engine start.
As most of the other guys said, it will be hard to find some place to do it. And the way you are talking about it, there would have to be some kind of device that would keep pressure in the clutch lines so it won't crash. I may be wrong, but I don't think such a device exists. An install guy told me once of a bracket that had laser lights to tell what position the shifter was in, but I have never seen it.
I have an older Clifford (now DEI) G4 system on my 5sp that was made to handle remote starts with a manual transmission. The system has a clutch bypass wired in and a sensor that goes to I think it is the starter or ignition switch. I didn't do it so you would have to find the wiring diagrams, but it is supposed to monitor the amps needed to turn the starter. If it is in gear supposedly it requires a little more amps than when it is in neutral to start. If it reads to high in a fraction of a second it clicks back and all you here is the starter barely click.
Now in order to even get that far you have to follow a proceedure when parking or you can NOT remote start when you come back. Park car in "N", pull e-brake, take feet off pedals, press the buttons on the remote, remove keys from ignition (engine continues to run), get out and close the door, hit the arm button and the car will shut itself off. If anything is touched or opened between the time you parked and the time you come back, it will not even try to remote start. PITA, but kind of cool.

I also have remote start on my GSR. One time it was left in first gear and the car drove away. LUCKILY there were no cars parked in front of me. My boss's son had remote start on his manual trans car as well.... I guess he accidently left it in gear and his car drove right into his work. He got FIRED right after....lol
Its a nice function... I had my friend whom's a manager of circuit city install mine. Took him 2 hours to install my entire system. It just costed me the alarm and a 6 pack!
