certain cams you buy requires an upgraded valvetrain....
i was planning on getting skunk stage 1 cams....i know stock Type R valvetrain will hold up...but I am planning on upgrading the cams again later on....so i was planning on getting skunk2 valve springs and skunk2 retainer.....but my friend told me that skunk2 retainers are fairly week and will tear up after like 30,000 miles is this true or should i get the skunk retainer he told me to just use stock retainer....with skunk2 valve springs...to me this seems odd....so i need help
could this be true or should i get the complete valvetrain

Id get both...many people complain about the titanium retainers somewhat bending over time...mine have a little over 5k and no signs of problems yet so...
there was a big topic on aftermarket retainers about 2 months ago. they are really meant for off road use. for example racing teams and such swap them out every few races or so. after a while on daily driving they will grind away.
do an archived search on retainers. i believe it was posted in the ITR forum

Are you planning to raise your redline? If not, you can use your stock Valvetrain with the Skunk2 Stage 1's without a problem. I've been using mine and redlining my alot and i have NO problems whatsoever.
If you're planning to raise your redline, then you NEED a valvetrain upgrade. I've also heard about Skunk2 Retainers bending over time, but I'm not sure...

its not skunks fault..its titanium (ti)! ti is a very strong metal so its less likely to break or crack but it is a little on the soft side meaning that if you have a piece of metal rubbing against it for a long (the valvesprings) time then itll wear away..then when it gets really thin, then thats when the spring pops off..!
People are trying to Nitride coat the suface to see it it will solve this problem. Nitride coating hardens the surface of the ti so that it will not wear..someone in this forum is testing it right now to see if it works...
Id get the Skunk2 Valvetrain..then when you get new cams you can install new retainers...ive heard the Skunk2 retainers should be changed every 20k miles.
