OBD2A or OBD2B
Hi all, new to the teg forum. My friend has a stock 97 gsr, it was a theft recovery and the only thing that was stolen was the ecu. Another p72 was picked up and installed. Now he gets a cel 22(vtec pressure valve), and it only revs to 4800 rpm's. Everything was checked or replaced with another part except the ecu. You can tell there was a little wiring done with the plugs for the ecu. One thing that I noticed was that the map sensor was wired separately from the rest of the wiring. It goes under the dash behind the stereo and thats as far as I can see it. I know the plugs for obd2a and obd2b are different, but what I want to know is how to tell which ecu is which?
1) How can I tell what ecu this is?
2) Why would you have to wire the map sensor up separately if the car is
completely stock and the wiring has never been touched before? Would it be because I have the wrong ecu and it was rigged?
I will try to get pictures up sometime this week if it helps.

A 97 GSR uses an OBDIIA. P/n 37820-P72-A03.
That code that you recieved is usually caused by low oil level or pressure. Basically the VTEC pressure switch is not seeing adequate pressure to engage the VTEC system.

So, you think he is in need of a oil pump? I am sure the car sat for quite some time. We ran a compression test and hit 210 across all 4 cylinders. I guess it never crossed our minds since the car has low milage. We'll hook up a oil pressure gauge tomarrow and see what we come up with. Thx

Immobilzer like the ones they have in 97+ preludes? Cause I know the 97+ prelude ecu's are useless when swapping a h22 into a civic/teg. Would a OBD2B still run in a 97 GSR without problems? Or will it even start?

your going to need a OBD2A to OBD2B jumpers, if its a JDM ecu you should be fine..but if its a USDM then you need to get the immoblizer removed..yes just like that of a ludes ECU. try looking on ebay sometimes you'll come across a steal in it!...like me! i got a JDM p73 for 50 bucks!!! and it works! vtec pulls hard but i got a CEL havn't had time to scan the code..but my guess is because its running too rich!

Usually the oil level is low or the screen at the VTEC solenoid is clogged, which causes low oil pressure delivery to the VTEC assembly. Change the oil and filter while you're at it.

You should be able to find a 96 or 97 P72 ECU for cheap. Make sure the P/N ends in A02 or A03. Addind a conversion harness is adding cost, as is removing an immobilizer.
From you original post, it sounds like you have the correct ECU anyway. You said it was a P72 and the harness must have plugged in because the car ran.
