Pull it back out... it needs to sit almost flush with the tranny case. It should slide it pretty easily if the teeth are lined up correctly.

it doesnt seem to go in all the way, and the teeth are lined up because its turning inside.....but then i put it back together and i can go through every gear and it wont move an inch.

like i said the teeth lined up and i push it as far as i can, but it doesnt sit flush. shoudl i try hammering it witha rubber mallet? it shouldnt be this hard right?

Sometimes it is stuck but I would not hammer on it yet. Try pushing really friggin hard casue sometimes it acts like a bitch. If that doesn't work I would look at the axle again to make sure you have the correct one. Count the splines on the axle and the tranny. Did you replace the clutch or something? Or just the axle? The last thing you want is to start hammering on it if it is not the right part.
