All Hondas do this if you put them into reverse right off the bat. Put it into 1st gear first. This happens on my Civic with 25,000 miles on the tranny, and my Accord with 187,000 miles on the tranny. Get used to it.
LMAO, this is all too true. I just pp it in first roll for a split second, and throw it back in fourth and works fine all the time......Funny i thought i was the only one. LEarn something new all the time..

This has happened on EVERY DA, DC, EK and EG car that I've ever worked with or who have had friends who have owned them. It's a Honda thing.

happens to me in my DA sometimes... what i do is let the clutch out halfway then try again. doesn't always work the first time, but 2-3 tries and it'll go in gear. that grinding sound sure doesn't sound too good does it

its because reverse isn't syncronized like all the other gears, that and their toothed gears unstead of hellical - thats why it makes a whining noise when you're backing up

And if I remember correctly, it says to do this process in the owner's manual (91 Integra).

no.. exactly what they said. I think it only grinds when you are rolling back and try to stick in in reverse. it needs to be put in gear first.
if its stuck and putting it into 4th first doesnt work, put it in 1st just inch it forward, then put it back in reverse.

I get this problem every now and then but ive never tryed the 1st or 4th gear trick .. i just let the clutch out alittle bit and it will go right in the grinding sound also happens when the car revs up and u try to put it in gear or when the car is moving and u put in in reverse
seems like everyone gets this problem once in awhile
