I have a 92 cx hatchback with a 99 gs-r swap, it has cams, cam gears, b16 head, type r pistons and rings, headers, exhaust, and a comptech sport short ram intake. I was wondering how much an AEM cold air intake would help the performance?

Just get the ice box,it will give you pretty much the same HP as the AEM.It too is a cold air intake.

The dyno from import tuner showed the comptech short ran made 1.9WHP,the ice box gave it an additional 5.9whp.If I can find the link I will post it,but if you look for import tuner and go to there dyno plot section you will see this done on a 95 GSR.

they are about the same, but the aem has a large bump in power around 4-5k rpms

my aem cai helped me out a lot! Better throttle response, quicker revs, smooth pull and power! i love it! But wouldnt mind trying out a comptech ice box

Ice box better low and mid and almost the same high end power,Except for the small hump in midrange the AEM has,but the ice box still has better low and mid range power, and almost the same at high end.

the b16 head flows the best at high rpms

I think people underestimate the gains of bolt-ons so as not too sound ricey and ignorant. But on a worked VTEC engine, I wouldn't be surprised if you got around 10 peak whp with the famous AEM mid-range spike.

the AEM CAI is more for throttle response then big HP numbers

you will not notice a difference between the two. honestly, who's going to notice 1hp to the wheels @ x-rpms?
if icebox is cheaper, go for it. keep in mind BOTH cold air intake setups are going to have hydrolock risk. Icebox may be better because you can just take that extension off in the rainy season and still have the short intake.

Re: How much will a CAI really help? (avsrule414)
I drove threw 2 of the worst dwonpoors I've ever witnessed, the streets were like rivers, and my car is slammed,I plowed threw these rivers like nothing with no worries with the ice box on,now had that been the AEm I would be buying a motor replacement. With the AEM on I drove threw a nice size puddle and my car started stalling. This same AEM was installed on my friends teg,he was on the road that same day and had to pull over in a down poor and disconnect the AEM I gave him to use.If you hydrolock with the Ice box on your an idiot IMO.Its a short ram.

Re: How much will a CAI really help? (maggsgsr)
And the ice box has better throttle response then the AEM being its a short ram, shorter distance for the Air to travel. The Ice box is a better all around intake, the AEM is a little better at high RPMS,maybe 1 2 WHP.

its a known fact that an AEM CAI is the best intake there is. get one. it should give you 2-5 hp.

Since you can't use PM's yet, how much did you pay for your b16 head?
