Basically you can get most of the "tuneability" of a standalone from a piggyback. They are excellent systems, but what its capable of depends on the tuner. I'd say for a street setup its the best way to go. About protecting the car under boost, do you mean like a timing retard device? I dont think hondata has that feature but I know the J&S Safeguard is built for just that.
