hidden power of automatic?
i drive a automatic 97 integra and the only mods i have on the car is an AEM short ram intake and a strut bar. nothing else. i never floor my car but i do gas hard sometimes to hear my intake once in a while. flooring it just makes it feel so abusive. after i got off work one day my co-worker wanted to "race" me. so when the lights turned green, we took off. i still didn't floor it but i was gassing hard.. close to red line but not there yet. after a second or two into the "race", my car wasn't really "taking off". i was a little ahead but i didn't want to put my car into any more abuse with the harsh throttle so i let go of the peddle. then i noticed my co-worker beginning to really pick up so out of instincts and pride, i put my foot back on the gas. but this time it was different.. my car took response A LOT quicker and my car really took off. i was really surprised and shocked at what kind of power my car had. i never knew my car had that kind of power. i gassed about the same amount as i did before. so is there like a kind of power boost in automatics when you gas hard.. let go.. and then gas again? like maybe gas up to a certain RPM and let it drop to another RPM and then gas hard after.. maybe something like that?? if anyone knows or can explain please do! it will be most appreciated! thanks!

lol i was just thinking that; hit the gas twice and flames come out yoru exhaust and your front end flies into the air

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no hidden power in automatics. What you felt was the transmission downshifting. The rpm's are then higher, and you are in a lower gear, giving you the impression that it's accelerating faster.
You are feeling the benfits of mechanical advantage. Lower gearing and higher engine speed. This feeling is even MORE pronounced in 5-speed cars. Sit in a 5-speed car and accelerate hard. You'll be even more shocked, as the gearing is much shorter, and you can gas it whenever you want, and the car will just go instead of thinking about downshifting first.

Automatic 4bangers are SLOW, its the Butt Dyno effect it feels fast because you never floor it, My car is a 5 speed with 88K and it doesnt feel fast at all, Unless your in the passenger seat.
To add to my post, I also had an 1997 Integra automatic. Stock, I pulled an 16.9 in the quarter mile. As soon as I swapped it over to a 5-speed, I did a 15.8. That's over a full second faster. A full second is a lot in the quarter mile, so you can see how much faster a 5-speed is over an automatic.

mm, I dunno whats with the autos, i find my car is faster when i don't floor it too. When you have the pedal down about 6-7/8ths, the car has more pep than full out.
And second gear in the auto tegs really pulls between 3-5K. But the other 3 gears suck.

i wasnt gonna comment but I guess I am. What kind of car does ur buddy have, a Geo Metro? By not flooring it and letting off the gas a little, ud prolly run a 18 flat. Personally I would put this is he kill section but the oly thing taht should be killed is this thread.

You guys make it seem like it has no power.
The automatic transmission just eats up more torque than the manual does. The manual gives you more of the engines torque, while the automatics don't.

Lol yeah this is definatly the funny thread of the week. Anyways the fast throttle response ur feeling is probly cause ur car is not downshifting, see in automatics when u take ur foot off the gas it will go to idle, except when ur cruising on the highway or above 60 mph the tranny and engine speed will lock so it doesn't have to downshift ( if u're going fast enough) and take off from idleing. Watch ur tach next time ur on the highway and u'll see that it locks in and doesn't drop down to idle but when ur on city streets ur car will drop to idle when u take ur foot off the gas. I say manuals all the way cause they don't have a dumb automatic clutch that puts it into neutral, the engine and tranny speeds are always locked so u get instant throttle response.
