Help. Is this engine knock? VIDEO
Hi, I developed a engine problem last night, and I can't seem to diagnose the problem yet. Maybe you guys can help me.
Setup:
Rebuilt b18c1 block with itr pistons, acl bears, arp hardware. Ran great for 2 years
b18c1 head with itr cams and valvetrain. Skunk2 IM and ITR TB as well.
98 itr ecu.
Oil level is OK
I rebuilt this engine 2 years ago and its ran great. Always idled at a steady 800rpm, very strong throughout the rpms. One issue is that this "knocking" noise was always apparent for a half second in a cold start. In the video link I provided below, you can actually hear the "knock" at the very beginning when I start the car. This was a cold start after it happened last night. So now the "knock" can be heard in the everytime the throttle is at 20% or something. Also gets faster as rpms rise.
Anyone any idea whats wrong?

Always check the easiest things first. Check to see if your sparkplugs are loose which will rattle (happened to me before and I thought it was a rod knock) Then take off your valve cover and see if any of your valve lashes are broken. If all else fails, it's a rod knock and that sucks ;(
deffinately doesn't sound good thats for sure. i agree with checking spark plugs first, that to me sounds like something in the top end, not the bottom end. too high pitched for bottom end, but then again, it is a video.

i had a rod knock in my teg.. the only difference is that my knock was continous and got louder when i reved..to me it seems like you know hear it when you rev.. lets hope its not a rod knock !
Drain the oil and pull the oil pan. If you got little brass and metal chunks in the oil pan you're gonna need new bearings, micropolish the crank (if still useable), hot tank it, and put it back together.
Also when you changed the cams did you plastigauge the cam holders and make sure they were in spec? Did you plastigauge the bearings? Did you replace the thrust washers? Were the pistons balanced when it was put back together? Was it bored out and honed and was all that in spec with the new pistons? Did you change the oil pump? So on and so on. All these little things could be the reason your motor is already broken (that is if the bearings are shot).
