Help with Drivetrain Compatibility and Comparing
Hey I have a 97' RS(LS) and I need a new clutch. I would also like to upgrade to a GSR tranny and a lighter flywheel, such as a CTR or ITR. My questions are:
1. What year(s) of the CTR and the ITR's will bolt up without frustration and which would you recommend? Neither?
2. Exedy stage 1 clutch kit FTW for DD?
3. What clutches will bolt onto a GSR trans? Any B series or is there a difference?
3. Buy used or new?

Get a new clutch hands down. IMO fidanza's are the best flywheels you can buy. B-series is b-series. And i like the EXEDY clutches. You can find the Fidanza and the Exedy clutch together in a combo package on EBAY for a fairly decent price.
For transmissions: CTR=USDM ITR=Spec 96 and 97 ITR
The JDM Spec 98 and newer DC2 ITR has the 4.785:1 FD compared to the 4.40:1 USDM final drive.
Any of these will bolt on with ease.

rather than pay $1200 for a JDM transmission, if it were my money i would go right here

brand new from the acura dealer for only $500 more. this way you know who has driven it and what kind of condition that it's in. the only benefit to JDM is that late low ring gear if such a thing is desirable to you. personally, i'd stick with the 4:40 for a couple of reasons, freeways are one of them.
By the way, what will you give for a 97 GSR tranny. it's one of the s80 stamps. just no LSD. you might convince me to sell mine add the difference and order one of those i mention above.

Thanks for the input. I'm not too picky about final drive I guess. I have a LS tranny and anything will be better, but to 4.4 from what I have now is questionable to how much better(in first and second gear).

--- if i remember correctly. 1st and 2nd are the same between gsr and ls. Its 3rd 4th and 5th what is different. I could be totally wrong though.

You are correct about the first and second gear ratios, but final drive is different. If you're interested, refer to the charts in this link for comparison...

My Clutchmasters 8 lb flywheel has been on my car for about 140K miles, no problems. I just recently installed a new friction surface on the flywheel, when the flywheel had about 135K on it.
Light flywheels have nothing to do with reliability, unless it's cracking or shattering you're concerned about. If you do lots of heavy drag launches, then a super light flywheel might not be a good idea, but for normal driving and maybe the occasional autocross, it's great.
