Head question
In the process of pulling the head on a '95 GSR (number 4 cylinder has 40# compression with BIG oil leak at #4 cylinder head gasket location. Think it has been leaking for a while but the compressoin got suddenly worse.
Questions:
1: The intake manifold bolts look like a PITA to get to (the lower ones)...... Do most people pull the head with the intake manifold attached or detach the intake mainfold first? Looks like a very miserable job to get to those lower nuts.
2. The HAynes manual says to back off the adjustment on all of the valves before pulling the cams. It looks like adjusting the valves will be hard too.... (because they are so deep in the head). Is it really necessary to loosen the valves all the way up just to pull it? I am hoping the head isn't warped and I'll just be able to replace the head gasket... and not messing with the valves would be a plus.

actually, yes, the intake manifold bolts are a PITA. i just took my head off in my '90 GS Teg. however, if ur going to replace or do work on the intake manifold, leave it on the head and just disconnect all the fuel line, electrical, hoses, etc. and take the head and manifold off as one piece. otherwise u have to reach up underneath the manifold from under the car. save urself.
u shouldn't have to loosn the valve to take the cams off either. and i would wait until u take the head off to mess with them.

also make sure to unbolt the head in the right sequence...im sure you can find a thread on it..im too lazy to search..its been covered plenty of times

1. First remove the mounting bracket and the rest is pretty simple. You can get all but two nuts/bolts off from up top, but there are two that have to be done from underneath. Pull the oil filter and take a 12mm socket wrench and loosen those last two nuts. When I pull the head, I just take off all the bolts/nuts holding it to the head and pull it back away from the head. I have found no need for pulling the hoses, sensors, etc. off.
2. I have never done this. Just pull the TB off and pull the cams out once you get the cam holder bolts and distributor off.
As for the head bolt loosening sequence, loosen in two steps starting outward and moving in.
