Default GSR Ecu question

The more I read the more confused I get b/c I don't know whether what I'm reading or not is true. A few questions. Is the ecu different from a usdm and a jdm gsr? If so, what? And, what is the original ecu for an usdm obd1 gsr? Thanks for the help in advance.
